Currently looking at a 2009 Z1 with 135 hours. Boat will need about 40% of the vinyl replaced, new stereo speakers and other minor repairs. Have not test driven it yet but they assure me its in sound condition. Boat does not have factory ballast but does have cruise control. I am unsure of the value of this boat, advice on what to offer would be awesome!

You pose a good question, for which we will need more information and pictures if you have them but it makes me weary that if 40% of the viynl NEEDS replacing, what does the rest look like? I would dive deep into the guts of that boat AND TEST DRIVE before I make an offer. Sored outside, with just under 20 hours a year on the motor. Most of us average about 60 hours a year and heard about a guy that did a 1000 in a year, so 20 seems very low. When you test drive it, check every switch drive it like you would if it were your boat and don't be shy about it. Here are some average prices for the repairs you mentioned:
Vinyl-3-5k
Stereo-Depending on what needs to be done can be 1k could be >10k
Ballast-average for a complete system 3-5k
Good luck and welcome to the site.

I just bought a 2010 Z1 with 140 hrs on the dial. The interior was near perfect albeit a bit dusty from storage. I didn't want to buy a project as its coming into our Summer here in Oz and we wanted a boat to use now.. I guess you would need to weigh up what the whole project is going to cost and the time factor too. Make sure you calculate that into your offer to buy.

I would also question the hour meter. My hours are stored in the Faria tach, which had to be replaced in August due to a lighting/beeping malfunction. Anybody who checks the hour meter on my boat now sees 3 hours. I'm too honest and would never advertise or sell it that way, but I could see how a dishonest person could... It's possible that all those hours could be from this last summer... test drive, test drive, test drive... be hard on it. Is it at or near a boat dealership? Any brand dealer or marine service tech should be able to run diagnostics on the engine to see if there are any problems and any seller not trying to hide something, would be more than willing to let you. It may cost you a little bit of money, but if your serious about the boat, it could also save you a lot of money.Last edited by Bryan; 11-26-2015, 03:43 PM.

I would run from something like that. The potential for headaches in a neglected boat would drive you insane.
Just my 2 cents. Boats are the best things ever, but boat issues are among the most frustrating things ever.Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like bananas!

Spend more to get the best boat you can find in your budget
I'd take an older boat in order to get better condition
Boat issues can ruin a week's holiday in a heartbeat!

I would think it is probably safe to assume that he put 50 hours on it the first year, 40 on it the next and then it has finally been sitting for the last 2 years. In a boat that is only a few years old, it would is not likely such a problem. I get a little leary when I see 2006 or 2007 boats with that few hours. 2009, it may or may not be a problem. I would ask him and get a feel for what has gone on with it. Hopefully he has changed the oil and done routine maintenance. If I used my boat less than 20 hours a year, I might forget all together about changing the oil. I ride dirt bikes in the winter, and last winter I was injured so didn't ride. I cannot even remember when I last changed the oil. I was releived yesterday to see that the oil looked brand new as I prepare for this winter. I think it was sheer luck that I didn't have dirty oil sitting in it for the last 18 months.Be excellent to one another.

Just one question: Are you looking for a fun toy, or a project?
Nothing wrong with either choice, but the answer will dictate the boat you buy. If you want something to repair, tweak, fiddle, etc. and the pride that comes from completely restoring something to awesome condition, this one could be a great choice. If you want something reliable so you can spend your time on the water instead of upside down in the engine compartment, keep looking.

That boat needs to go to someone with a diacom. I would want to know everything about that motor. That will also tell you the true hours, any codes it has thrown etc etc.
That is extremely suspect that 40% of the vinal needs replacing. I would rather spend more money and get a boat i was comfortable with.

Why does 40% need replaced? I have a 2009 RZ4 and there are several areas that are splitting. I have around 200 hours on mine. Not sure if this is low hours, but it starts and runs just fine, without issue. I would want to verify the hours, but I would rather have low hours. If it has high hours, aren't the issues with the engine the same? If it is not taken care of and well maintained, you will have the same issues.
