Your tabs seem a touch more inboard than factory ones--presumably because of your spray pockets preventing placement. I wonder if that is playing a role? I know that GSA tabs are very sensitive to slight misplacement inboard/outboard. I believe the MB factory placed a few incorrectly and the waves were difficult to manage.

I am sure you will get it figured out. If nothing more you can sell those beautiful tabs to someone looking to retrofit taps3 to a hull that is known to work well with it. They look awesome.

I have also thought about your back up plan. I'm sure they will work for someone if I can't make them work for me. Before I do that I will try bolting on an extension to the tab that will cover the spray pocket area. So even though the tab will be bolted inboard, it will act just like it is bolted all the way outside. It will be a huge tab then, though. That also has me worried. I'm also planning to increase the size of my taps plate.

        Epic Fail: Part 2

Well I'm leaning more and more towards the back up plan. I had much more weight in the boat this last weekend than I did a few weeks ago. Myself and my three brothers did a weekend at Sand Hollow. We spent the first few hours playing with TAPS 21. With the extra weight that Brad let me borrow, I thought for sure I would be headed in the right direction. That was not the case. It was still a white washed mess. I could toss the rope, but it was very hard to stay in it. My brothers, all bigger than me, had no chance. I figure I had about 900 in each corner and 250 in the bow, plus the weight of my three brothers. All 200+. That should be enough to at least tell me I'm headed in the right direction, right?

All I can think of at this point is that these tabs are not the shape for this boat. There is a new thread going on here where another 21v owner (sorry I forget your name) is having success. His tab is very different than mine. And from what I gather I don't think he puts the tabs as far down as I do. I don't think I really tried putting them half way down, or less. Just all the way down. So I need to try that and hope it works. If not I may try building a smaller tab just for fun.

I was worried this might happen so I built a HOD gate before we left. I was blown away at how well that worked. We stopped "surfing", raised the TAPS 21, stuck this thing to the side of the boat, and instantly had a wave we could all really surf! I just kept saying over and over that it was so stupid! It just flat out worked. It never fell off the entire three days we were out there. Not one issue, just a surfable wave the whole time. The wave was still a bit dirty, but just barly. We didn't spend any time dialing it in. We just wanted to play.

So now my thought is why not sell the entire TAPS 21 to someone with an older Z boat and buy myself a good surf board with that money? It's nearly identical to an RZX and a Z3 tab so it should work great for them. And save them thousands over a retrofit. That's a win win for everyone, right?

Have you thought about converting it into a surf gate like the Malibu's?

Can't you take a picture by side when your surf plate is all way down ?

I won't change the design. If I keep this system I will adjust the size of the tab. Once down it lists the boat a ton and makes it hard to steer. The HOD gate is not noticeable at all except sometimes it can spray straight up a bit if installed at an upward angle. I don't think my wife will want to drive the boat any longer if I can't get it to drive nicer. Which is another vote for the HOD Gate.

There's a picture of my mine, the plate is 12 degrees downer the bottoms of the boat. When I put my plate at this angle, the wave is to long, my preferred setting for regular is 0 degrees and -6 for goofy.

I don't understand that. So 0 degrees would be flat or parallel with the bottom of the hull and -6 would be up above the hull? I agree that my wave was better with the goofy side above the hull. I take that to mean the tab needs to be removed.

I didn't get a picture last night, but my tabs go close to vertical, just like the TAPS 3 tabs do. Well, there's go a bit further down than mine do, but close.

Edit: maybe by -6 degrees you meant 6 degrees down?

my preferred setting for right now, due of the rotation of the prop, is more difficult to achieve a good wave on goofy side. the plate need to be a little downer. my prefered setting is 9 to 12 degrees

and on the other side, my plate didn't need to be down like that. If i put my plate at 12 degrees , my wave is very flat and super long.

i don't say there's number is absolute but there's only the result of my experience with my setup.

I don't really understand your problem to get a good wave ? is it washed or is it to flat and you need more push ?

outta curiousity are you using the opposite tab to the surf wave?

We used the correct tab for the side we surfed. With even weight in the boat, the wave was fully washed out on both sides from either tab all the way up to all the way down. I got a decent wave with both tabs all the way up and listing the boat. I got the best wave ever (for this boat) by evenly weighting and using the HOD gate.

I'm going to try to hit the lake again on saturday. This lake is still too cold to play in so that will give me the chance to really mess with everything I have and take lots of pictures with no surfer in them.

Old thread, but did you ever have any success here?
I have my 23V setup with a malibu style surf gate, and it works very well. only ~200 lbs of ballast and I have no problem going ropeless.
I had considered swapping over to this style setup, but not if it's not going to be an improvement.
Just curious if you ever made any headway or stuck with the suck gate?

I probably didn't put in the tuning time required to make them work. As other have posted up, with the same boat, they can work. I guess I'm a bit impatient. We used a suck gate and it was awesome. I put the system up for sale and someone on here quickly grabbed it and reported back it worked great for them. I think the spray pockets killed it as I think the tabs needed to be mounted further out. Just a guess though.
