    Knee brace

I have a small tear in my MCL on my right knee that flares up more and more often. Even wake surfing it flares up now. Haven't wakeboarded in awhile because of it. Eventually, I will have to have surgery, but trying to prolong it as long as possible. Does anyone know a good knee brace for wakeboarding/wakesurfing?

image.jpgI had the same problem. I thought I was going have to give up wake boarding. I think any knee brace is better than nothing. Local CVS, Walmart or Taget should have something. I have a simple Velcro fabric brace and it helps support the knee socket and I am back to running and wake boarding. Of course, little weight loss does not hurt any.

I think I'm going to need something a little more serious Nick, but thank you for your reply.

I completely tore my MCL 15 years ago. Typically MCL's will repair themselves with proper rehab and no surgery. I did extensive rehab for 3 months and with the use of a brace similar to the link below I was doing sports, etc. at 100%. I stopped using the brace about 10 months after the tear and have been able to do anything and everything ever since...

I never used one for water sports but on my first acl tear I had a custom brace to play cutting sports post surgery for 24 months. The second time I tore my acl I had a don joy brace that I think was off the shelf. The second don joy brace was slightly more comfortable than the custom brace. You will want to make sure the brace is matched to your instability. The brace for acl was different than the Pcl brace. Not sure how these braces handle water. Good luck!

I used a Don Joy custom knee brace for wakeboarding, surfing and snowboarding for about 2 years after a MCL tear (from snowboard). It did fine in the water. I tried the nylon wrap braces with the side supports a few times when I forgot my main brace -- nowhere near as effective at stabilizing the joint.

As above, the MCL will usually heal itself. You might be able to get an ortho doc to diagnose the MCL tear and prescribe the Don Joy to be paid under insurance.

Older thread but the CTI off the shelf (ots) series are about as close to a custom brace as you can get.
