This milk in my vdrive can't be good!

Winterizing boat. Check vdrive fluid and find a thick white milky substance in there. I assume this is not what it is supposed to look like.

Any tips on complete drainage and flushing would be great.

You will need to suck it out, fill it back up and repeat several times to clean it all out. You will need to start it so the new fluid will mix with the old. Might want to find out how the water got into it first.

Will just running it for a few seconds mix it up or do I need to put it gear?

I would fill it up w diesel and let it clean the old oil out then drain and add new oil

Need to put it in gear so the gears in the v-drive can mix it up some.

Don't put it in gear if sitting on a trailer unless you pull the neutral pin so the prop doesn't turn.

Or, if you do have it on the trailer, bathe the strut bearing in water while the shaft is turning. Have someone hold a hose on it or something. You don't need to turn the v-drive for long each time, just enough to mix the fluids up a bit. I wouldn't go above idle, either.

Be patient, this is going to take a while since there's no actual "drain" plug on the v-drive. And you do need to figure out where the water is coming from or you'll be right back here.

Thanks for replies. Not sure what you guys mean by bathe the strut bearing or neutral pin! I'm pretty sure I know how water got in. Handle on dipstick snapped off (previous owner). There was not a perfect seal going on.

The Nibral thing hanging from the bottom of the boat that the propshaft goes through, spray it with some WD-40 or apply liquid detergent and water to it before you put the transmission in gear for 5 seconds.

The propshaft exits the hull and passes through a big metal strut that supports it just in front of the prop itself. There is a bearing between the propshaft and the strut that expects to be in water when the propshaft is turning. You need to make sure it has water running over it if the propshaft will be turning, so it has lubrication and cooling.

After searching net for an hour I came across parts explosion diagram for my ZF 45 IV v-drive. Turns out there is a drain plug. Pulled plug and am draining last bit of goo overnight. Tomorrow I'll put plug back in and fill with diesel fuel to hopefully dissolve the rest of the milkshake. Then I'll drain fuel, let it dry a few days and repeat a couple times. Once dry and hopefully clean inside I'll refill with 20w-50 oil. That's as close to straight 30 weight as I can find in these parts.

Into the bottom of your boat?

I suck as much out as possible with a fluid extractor then drain what's left. I spread rags or an old towel down there to soak it up.

Looks pretty good too me.. I don't see why you wanna change it ... just add it to your cereal or a scoop of chocolate powder.. lots of uses! Glad you are taking care of it though.. can't be to good to be rolling around with fluid like that!

I think lawnmower crankcase oil is 30 W. Check out Canadian Tire.
