        Why not Oregon?

I'm within 1 1/2 hours to 10 water sources, same to great snow skiing, 1 hour to Oregon coast, 3 hours to high desert & a ton of nice water. 4 distinct seasons none too harsh. Lots of jobs for police & teachers.

          Why not Oregon?

          Jilly,
Great recreation....I agree I live here, but:
Not warm all the time, except now when it's fricking HOT
It's getting crowded in Portland metro, and Salem/ Eugene
Cost of living.........HAHAHA have you seen the housing market lately?
Politics...............well lets just say not conservative, and I mean NOT CONSERVATIVE
BUT: You cannot beat the beauty, environment, and access to all the lakes, rivers and resevoirs here in oregon. We are a growing area and probably the last of the west coast cities that you can still get a fairly decent house for under 400K. There is a huge demand for Fire/ Police/ and Teachers in the region. It may cost more to get set up here in Oregon as opposed to Texas/ Arizona/ or North Carolina, but I also believe the potential to make more money in the housing sector long term is here in Portland. Also if you love winter sports like we do....ie snowboarding, there are world class resorts within an hour or two (Timberline and Bachelor). There is also the Oregon Coast. Added plus is the BEAVERS>>>>GO BEAVS....lol

400K here will get a 2.5K sqft home on the lake with a boat dock/house with a lift. Water is useable 8 months out of the year, longer if you just want to ride and not get wet. 40 miles of boating water, and much of it in smaller rivers that are very smooth. The rivers (dams so they become lakes) have navigation channels so you always have a minimum of 8 feet of water.

Yep, 4 distinct seasons, none extreme. High humidity in the summer but it is workable. No income tax, high sales tax (9.75%) . No boat trailer registration, car registration is $24.00 per year, boat registration is even less ($56.00 for three years). Many many boat ramps on the lakes so access is easy.

I grew up in southern Oregon 15 miles outside of Rogue River in the Wimer area. Summers were hot. Winters can be cold. But the biggest misery was the days and days of rain. Takes 5 days to get an inch of rain as it is constant drizzle. Snow was not a real issue as that was only an occasional event.

Only good boating then was the Rogue River and that sucker was cold all the time. Now they have Lewis lake and the water in the Rogue is colder than ever. Diamond Lake was useable but suffers from toxic algea blooms in the spring and summer. There are probably some small lakes of which I am not aware. But none can approach being able to travel 50 miles in one direction as I can do here in east TN.

I grew up on a farm and had to deal with the weather every day. Heat in the summer, cold and wet in the winter.

Oh, and our gas is currently at $2.87 a gallon. Cheaper than most areas of the country. And with a Tige that may be a considerable savings.

              Missouri: Where the rivers run.

Or more correctly, where the Rivers used to run before we damed them and made awesome lakes.

Cost of living: Low to moderate
              Climate: Four seasons, all mild
Lakes: Are you kidding me? There are no lakes in MO!
People: Starting to crowd in some areas, but there is a lot of open space.
400K: Your pick of house....don't get crazy though.

              Income and State Taxes

Same here in Texas. As for seasons, boating from April thru November. After that we get fall (compared to what you're used to), winter for a few days (occasional 20s and 30s, but mostly 70s) and spring (Feb-March). With a wetsuit you can board year round. Here's my son trying out his new wakeboard on New Year's Day (it was in the low 70s, but the lake temp was down to 58), he's only wearing a shortie:

Hey, you're just jealous because we have Devil's Cove!

How many party coves have their own website in MO?

(of course, it's not like either of us could ever go there at this stage in our lives)

This is what's on the lake around Nashville.

Everything is about the same as RayThompson described. There are 2 large lakes within 15 min of Downtown, and even better ones 1-2 hrs away (CenterHill Lake, Tims Ford, Dale Hollow).

FYI Al Gore, couldn't win his own state.
