    20V vs Mastercraft X1

My buddy has decided to buy an entry level surf boat. I realize all comparisons are just opinion but I would love to hear yours!

Option 1 - 2006 X1. Boat is in great condition with one exception as seen below. Interior is fantastic, 320 hours, motor is super clean, mechanically sound. Factory hard ballast tanks in rear lockers and one in center of boat under floor. Additional manual fill bags in each locker as well. Nothing in bow. Nice tower, great surf board racks (far superior to Tige racks), nice stereo. Here is the problem. The boat (on starboard side only) has long cracks in the gel coat that run the entire height of the side wall. See photo. I have accentuated a bit with brightness and contrast. The gel coat is black so you can see my reflection but you can also see the cracks. They are not structurally deficient, only in gel coat but look bad in my opinion.

Here is the ad for that boat. Now all you American boys keep in mind Canadian prices are WAY higher. Take the Cdn price and multiply by .75 for US dollar value. ie. 40k=30k

Option 2 - 2006 20V. Have not seen boat in person yet but looks to be in incredible shape. Manual fill ballast bags in rear. Stereo, cover, bimini. Nice clean boat with only 252 hours. Get coat looks pretty much flawless. $5000 less money.

So - my buddy seems hung up in that he thinks the Mastercraft is of superior build and will be better for resale. I don't think it matters that much about brand on a boat that old. More condition. From what I've read, the 20V can throw a very decent surf wave with a bit of weight in it.

Please let your opinions be known! Thanks.

I'd probably go with the 20V if your wanting to surf. The X1 is the same hull as the 205V and the direct drive 205 before that. Its a great hull to wakeboard with, but no matter how much weight we used to put in my 205, it didnt surf for crap. It also won't have as much room inside. They're a pretty narrow boat. Also, those gelcoat cracks look bad and expensive to fix.

In reality, the X-1 had a higher initial MSRP, likely sold at a higher OTD. Boil it down and i bet they both have depreciated at about the same percentage.

Does the 20V have PP or ACCU-SET?

For surfing, the advantage goes to the 20V for not having plumbed hard ballast tanks. The X-1 is going to need sumplimental, so you're manually filling a sac anyway and its going on top of the hard tank.

      The 20 is narrow also @ 94".

The 20v is 96 wide and has good space and the engine is a lot easyer to work on.

          heck, whats another 2"

Took a few to did up some specs on the X1. its a 20' 7" boat with a 90" beam, so the 20V will seem much bigger.

The X-1 is a nice clean looking boat, plus it has skulls which make any rider behind this boat at least 5 times more hardcore than boats without skulls. If he really wants to take his riding to the next level he could add some silhouettes of machine guns for the win.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Back to reality, if he is of the mindset that build quality is better on the MC I think the answer is staring you both in the face with that picture of gelcoat cracks. It might be cosmetic but who told you that? Did you have an independent marine surveyor or fiberglass expert inspect the cracks? Is it his first boat? Either way I would get both boats looked over by a mechanic. And I would offer at least 1,000 less from the asking price on the MC because of the skulls.

I have a friend with a 2008 X2 (20' mastercraft) and he struggles to get a good surf wave, fat sacs laying everywhere. The boat makes an awesome wakeboard wake but just does not surf well. Not sure how different the hull is from the 06 X1.
