A year to remember: Surfing Obsession Chronicled

This is more or less a journal entry of an OCD surf enthusiast. It reads like a short story and a confession all mixed together.

It has been a busy year.

I am near the end of year one. A lot has happened. At roughly this time last year, I was asked by my Axis A24 owning neighbor if I "wanted to learn to surf." I shrugged my shoulders and agreed, leaving my 9 month pregnant wife and 3 existing kids with her as I left for an hour. I got up on my second try, on what I believe now to be a board fit for a 130lb female LOL. I just could not go ropeless in about 6-7 tries, but I understood the theory; I "got" it. Game over, I decided immediately we are doing this.

The feverish boat search began. I chased a couple Centurions, liked a 24V, considered a couple 22Ves, but ultimately fell in love with Ragboy's storied 24Ve and its well chronicled history. I found a low hour 2006 within 500 miles and bought it sight unseen. I initially wished I had known 2006 was not the best, but ended up figuring out how to make it better even than I imagined. It arrived a bit dirtier than I thought, and with a few things not working. I test drove it literally for 10 minutes on a local lake, and home I went. I stuffed it into the garage and winter set in. Over the next 6 months I ripped out the factory ballast, rerouted the exhaust, relocated everything to centerline, added FAE, added Hydrophase and reworked the infamous throttle and Accuset, ordered and installed custom sacs-pumps-hoses-drains-intakes etc, replaced the steering cable, yada yada yada yada.....the hours racked up, the internet searches were endless....but the learning curve was huge. I had done my best to copy Ragboy's legendary boat. I waxed, shined, cleaned and waited for spring to come.

From there the lake trips began--tweaking, messing, weighting. Donning a dry suit and trying to surf. Teaching my brother in law to drive. Having a wire fall loose from the low pressure fuel pump and stranding us forcing me to swim the boat to shore in 45 degree water....I look back and laugh. I was so excited the whole time.

The board buying began--LF Fish, IS Red Rocket, Victoria Debut Grom, Lakewakes Flying Saucer Bigboy, Lakewakes Bean Grom, and finally a Walker Project Bazooka. I also bought and sold a Shred Stixx Thresher and Shred Stixx Headband. My wife thinks I am nuts.

I upgraded to HLCD tower speakers and Precision Power amps (holy cow, this beotch sounds great), and added independent volume control for the towers. I changed the interior LEDs to neat little blue ones.

My boat had a bolt back out and jam in between the tranny and v-drive. I thought I was screwed, but I dodged a bullet and everything was OK. The safe mode demon crept up, but the rewire fixed it immediately. I dinged a prop on my hoist because I am too cheap to buy the bow stop for $400. IDIOT I know.

It has been a busy busy summer. My surfing is going great. I love the Saucer and the Bazooka. I just read to add more bow weight and the wave is even better than awesome. I have passed 100 hrs on the boat with a month to go. I have wowed G23 owners, X30 owners, Malibu owners, and have taught 15ish new people to surf.

ALL OF THIS THANKS IN LARGE PART TO A NEAT GROUP OF TIGE LOVERS, SURFING ENTHUSIASTS, AND GENERALLY NICE GUYS WHO ARE WILLING TO LEND ADVICE TO WILLING PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO TRY HARD TO ADD TO THE DISCUSSION. THANK YOU GUYS!

Now a rich buddy is demoing boats, and took me on a Supra SE450. My friend's son sells Axis and has been calling me about T23s. A cool salesman in the local area has introduced me to his sweet Z3. My brain begins to churn. Do I need to surf level? Can the wave get that much better? Is the listing dangerous on our rough lake?

I have the money, but the practicality of upgrading is hard to convince myself of. I think another season minimum with my 24ve is warranted. But its hard, it seems like the grass could be greener ever so slightly somewhere else. But, I also think how much I have already, how lucky I truly am--and try to fight off gratuitous spending and discontent.

In the meantime, I think I will keep busy by trimming my swim deck and adding Deckadence flooring to old bessie. My carpet is always wet and stinky a bit. That may stave off the demons tempting me to upgrade for a while. Or also find another hobby to distract me this winter.

It has been indeed a busy year. CHEERS TO TIGEOWNERS.COM AND ALL YOU DO TO HELP EACH OTHER!

X2. 13 months ago a friend took me out in his X45 and first try I was surfing on his phase 5. One month later I sold my Crownline and bought a 22V, one month after that bought a new truck to tow it and 12 months later (last weekend) bought a bigger boat slip. My 14yo daughter is now surfing and a great driver. My 11yo son is just a starting and improving. Buying wetsuits now cause I need to extend the season.
Many issues and challenges have occurred during this period and TOs have always been there to get me back on the water, and many thanks. While I have never met any of you in person I know that all you are politicians of high moral standards and integrity.

That's so awesome to hear dakota4ce. I started taking out my parents boat when I was 15. As long as someone could get my friends and I to the lake we were off. Now 21 years later I still haven't lost the urge to go every waking moment I can. I have taught countless amounts of people from all over the world how to wakeboard and now surf in the last few years. One of the ones that sticks out in my mind was a guy from Zimbabwe. He wasn't quite used to our weather up here so we put 2 wetsuits and my heater top on him with a nice thick life jacket. We ended up just pulling him laying down on a surf board and he had the biggest smile that I can still see today. It really is a cool feeling to be able to introduce people to the sport/pass time that I love so much. Now, with having my own kids and friends little ones it opens that up even more. I've always told people. Even if I broke my leg and couldn't go in the water I would still want to be out on the lake as much as possible.

Boating to me is so much more than a hobby. I love every aspect of it. I get just as much of a kick from all the customizing that I do along the way to make it better and uniquely mine. I could talk for hours about boats or to help others along the way with their own whether it's random people or when dukesofhazard comes over to pick something up from me.lol.

              Great story Dakota,

More likely than not the majority of us have gone through the same thing; sure wish these forums existed some 20 years ago, would have made it easier.

I surf a new 247 (with extra ballast) a g23 a g25 both with extra ballast. A 2013 z3 with pro ballast and vx, a new supreme v226 with surf ballast and nothing and I mean nothing I have surfed touches my 24v wave. Most of the people get on and are amazed and or jealous of my boat. Some can't even surf it, because it's so steep. Unless they figure something out I won't be changing boats anytime soon Old Tiges Rule!!

Why is your carpet wet? It shouldn't be.

Its always wet from wet kids. It has nothing to do with leaks--sometimes also we take a wave over the bow, or over the side due to a listing and buried rub rail....sometimes 5 wet people and boards come into the boat before drying off. Thats all. Plus I felt Deckadence in a new Z3 and it was SWEET.

On the subject of it being too steep--that might be *part* of any potential issue. Its not the "friendliest" wave. And its not the most convenient wave to make. Now these are not factors if its just me and other adults in the boat--kids and learners are the ones that struggle. However, its very powerful for sure. I do wonder if I am getting full length out of it, or if any other boat allows for a longer wave. I hear people say they are 25 feet behind their boats? What are they using to measure?

I will say this, last Sunday night I added 150# and a 100# kid to the bow and the wave was very very nice. Longer than I had ever made before. Thats in addition to 350# or so in my ushape sac up there.

Duffy, do you still surf at 12-13mph these days? We have been surfing at 11 or 10.8. That could also be a factor. I don't think speeding up is going to work for me until I trim my swim deck out of the way. Things get weird at the higher speeds.

I surf at 12-12.5mph. For newbies and kids I empty a lot of ballast and put taps all the wave down and slow down. Seems to work great. Some girls want the wave long so I run taps all the way down and put it as like 12 or 12.2.

Here is my favorite wave model, all 5'1" of her. Makes my wave look huge!

I love reading stories like this. I'm sure we all have variations on that same story. Mine started with trying to surf behind my 19ft I/O! We would put kids on the tube to help yank the nose of the boat up out of the water.

It's nice that we have this venue to share our interests. I know my wife certainly doesn't enjoy talking about ballast pumps and wake plates.
