I cannot get the prop off

I've tried ACMEs harmonic plug and also the "puller" which is not really a puller at all - it is harmonic as well.

    Questions...

Can I just tighten down on the puller nut and get the prop to break loose? The instructions say no, but am wondering if anyone has tried/done that.
Any other ideas? I've beaten on it for awhile and it is not budging.

Ok, sounds as if you have both types of pullers?

If you have the C-clamp type then no, you cant keep cranking on the nut, the puller will snap. fallow the instructions.

But seriously, you may want to read his thread when he had trouble and eventual success.

The really funny thing is that I posted in that thread!

OK - tomorrow I will rotate it around. My C-clamp is the ACME weekend saver that has a fork at the strut end. I have been beating the c-clamp on the strut end to no avail.

When the sun comes up, we shall try, try again!

Thanks for letting me know not to try to tighten down the nut to pry the prop loose.....

try a little propane heat to the prop hub

You won't have this problem next time if you lube the end of the shaft with some bearing grease. As you discovered, a little bit of grease on the prop shaft is not going to make your prop just fall off either.

I probably said that in the other thread too....

Sometimes you will need to beat the back side of the clamp with a mallet to break it loose.

I used WD-40 sprayed all over the splines and the propshaft and left it soak in overnight. I then used the Acme prop tool and a hard rubber mallet and 2 x 4 wedged between blades and with the prop puller tension on the prop and a little banging with the mallet it came off with about 6 bangs with the mallet. Since the prop was chewed up due to an encounter with a submerged tree I wasn't worried about the prop blades but the 2 x 4 did not damage prop. Bearing grease definetly kept it from happening again on other boats I have changed props on.

                    Good luck.

I've had a few that were stuck on really good and a little heat always worked.

If you are going to use heat wrap the prop shaft with a wet rag to protect the strut bearings as noted in the thread mentioned earlier.

Had this problem too and I sprayed aero-kroil the day before and then heated the center of the prop using a heat gun. Rotate around the prop with gun to evenly heat. After about 5-8 min intervals I would tap the puller. On the second interval it popped.

                            Thanks guys!

I've limbered up and am ready to go beat on the prop. Lots of ways it seems to get it to break loose.

The prop I am taking off is definitely a saver... just a couple of minor bends I want to get fixed.

Thanks for the tip on the grease!

Then dont use a steel hammer directly on the prop. Use a brass hammer, brass drift and a block of wood.
