Did FAE destroy my surf wave? How to clean it up?

I recently installed FAE. I only did one surf run on it and wave seemed no different. That said, my wave was not big enough for me as I am a big guy and just learning to surf. I ordered a fly high sac from Mike (ChpThrl) and pulled the factory ballast box in my 08 Z1 and installed it. (That process by the way was super easy!) Factory box just slips right out and new bag was in in less than an hour.

So I have gone from a 250 lb factory box to about 1000 lbs. Wave is now much bigger but SO DIRTY! It is just wash and bubbles right up the center. There is no resemblance of a nice lip at all. See photos below. I don't know if it's the added weight, the FAE, or the fact that the swim deck is now 6 inches under water at stand still that is causing this.

If anyone can help me clean this thing up I'm all ears!

Tell us the remainder of your ballast setup.

I can't say for sure, but that looks like a classic 'not enough weight in the front' kind of wave. It also does not help that the kid appears to be sitting on the wrong side of the boat. Is the boat listing to the side?
    Be excellent to one another.

Yeah, give us ballast, bodies, Taps setting, speed etc and this place will have your wave in great shape in no time.

Agreed with Tall. What do you have in the bow? I upgraded the stock bow sac with one from Chp 450# i think????. Plus I had a loose 400# sac I put on the seats in the bow. That Z1 hull loves bow weight. I had to have taps at 8 on the goofy side and ran about 10.8mph. Stack your crew up behind the driver. Do not let them move when you are surfing...

          1)

One thing I can say, the swim platform (before I cut it) on the OPPOSITE of the surf side cannot touch the surface of the water or it would mess up the wave. On rough days I could see it skim a couple inches above the water then if it hit chop, it would mess up the wave and look similar to your picture. In that regard, I agree with Talltigeguy, bow weight will bring the nose down ballance it out some, and get the platform out of the water on the non-surf side. You can also try running the TAPs plate lower (at 1-2 vs 3-4, TAPS above 4 on my boat was always dirty before the flap).

          2)

FAE - mess with the Z-measurement in the instructions and verify its correct. Before adding my flap, my Z was off and it messed up the wave. I went a couple times without the flap and it was clean, I just re-added the flap because I like the wave and cleanliness at all TAPS positions better.

          3) This is as much a question as a statement. Didn't Jmoore have a Z1 of that era with issues on starboard side? He created a DIY Vx before Tige had released theirs to clean it up. You could try a mud flap but I would first give your setup and see if you can fix it otherwise.

          Good luck!

Found a link to Jmoore's wave thread:

If you can't get it clean where you want it. I think a mud flap would be my next mod/attempt based on everyone else's experience with it cleaning up wash or at least calming it down.

No flap, just weight. .. there is no replacement for displacement. ....

I did not have FAE though.

Knowing speed and TAPS are a must. That gen tige seems to like more bow weight then any other tige. I would maybe fill bow 100%, then start with the new sac 50% and use speed and TAPS to get a clean wave. Then, go to 75% on the rear sac. keep the speed the same and adjust TAPS to get the same clean wave. Next, go to 100%. I think you you will find 11-11.5 at least, is the best speed.

Thanks for all the quick replies! Iwndr that wave is GREAT! At least it gives me hope that my Zee can achieve that.

I had starboard fly high sac totally full.
                        I had bow full.
I had nothing in port side. (I still have my factory 250 lb box in there)
Taps was at around middle 4-5. Although as per my previous thread I think my gauge is going - it bounces all over the place.

Part of the problem was peeps all over the place. We were running out of daylight and it was just a first time test run of the fly high. I will do more experimenting and post the results.

That is a GREAT wave! Do you remember what specs you were at as far as ballast weight, taps, and speed were?

The surf side aft rub rail has to be touching the water at surf speed to get the best wave. Sitting idle it will be 4-5" above the water when properly weighted.

I know I can set my weight and then adjust speed and Taps for riders and boards. My wave is clean with 1000 lbs surf side and up to 400 lbs up front (depends on number of passengers), I keep all bodies as close as I can to the surf corner. I ride my skim board at 11.0 MPH and Taps at 4, my Ronix Thruster is 12.0 MPH with Taps at 2. My brother prefers the Ronix power tail with speed at 11.2 and Taps at 5.

First thing you need to do is get your people organized and not all over the boat, give that a shot and post back here.
