    Need A New Boat

Currently own a 2004 Glastron 18 foot GX 180 130 HP O/B. My son is active in wakeboarding on our lake, goes to wakeboard camps and competitions. I have a 400 lb. bladder in the ski locker to help with wake but it is still not that big and soft on the tops. I have briefly driven an Air Nautique, 22V, MB 210 Boss and passengered in a 22VE. My son also likes to water ski and use his wake skate and tubing is done minimally.
The Tige I felt was the most impressive in handling and wake size and shape of the three tested. At most there would be 5-6 people in the boat usually 2 plus a rider. I have been looking at the 20V as an affordable step up that would give GREAT wakes without ballast support; I would like to keep it simple. Docking is on an inside berth which makes maneuvering with a V Drive difficult, especially backing up. I think that is probably one of my bigger concerns. I have done some reviews of previous threads about the 20V and 22V comparison already. Are the wakes of sufficient size to allow my son to get enough air time to start learning back rolls and tantrums without adding bladders. I think the fuel economy will be as good or better on the 20V probably as my 130 HP Evinrude FITCH with the bladder. This whole search started early last year after my 15 year old son came back from camp and informed me our wake sucked compared to the 22V. I thought it was a load of bull until I drove it and saw for myself; ever since then I've wanted perfect pass, heater, shower, platform, more room, versatility and large wakes. The wife is almost convinced which was a huge hurdle since our boat only has 90 hours on it. Your opinions on the 20V or other options would really be appreciated. I don't want this to be another "If I had it to do over again" syndrome. Thanks in advance

I've never ridden behind a 20v, but I know the 22v is "adequate" without extra weight.

I'd still recommend a ballast system to anyone. It adds alot more versatility to the boat, on real rough days the boat rides alot better with a little ballast in the front. You will also need it if you plan on wakesurfing which is really starting to catch on.

I would recommend the 22v for versitility. Which ever boat you choose you will need to add ballast as your son improves. The boat throws a nice wake without ballast but it is really impressive with ballast. As far as backing the v drive up, you will get use to the lack of steering control and learn to drive the boat as well as you drive your i/o now.

      Good luck.

If I was you I would get the new RZ2, since you have the wife talked into it.

It seems to me that the 20v fits everyone of your needs. I think as your son improves he will naturally want to add ballast to the boat.

Its the nature of the beast, more weight, bigger wake.

The only concern with the 20v that I have is about 2 foot-itis. In a year, are you going to wish you had the extra 2 feet of the 22v?

2 foot-itis Def> the perpetual longing of boat owners for a bigger boat. Usually in 2 foot increments.

The wife is almost convinced on the Tige . I am not all that enthused about the RZ2 design yet still looking at it
As far as wanting something bigger down the road; I know what you mean, here I am looking only after a couple of years with the Glastron.
The 22V was cavernous with 6 people in the boat, not really sure I need that kind of spacious water living. Is the ballast system a factory option or is this after market? any preferences factory or aftermarket. Any other opinions on the 20V /22V would be appreciated, maybe this should have been in another forum?

Are you looking at one that your dealer has in stock? This is the last year for the 22v.

Don't get the factory ballast. Alot of us here use the Rival Ballast system and really like it. My dealer installed it, but you can do it youself.

Not sure how long you plan to keep the boat, but if it's for a while, then go with the 22V. It's one of the most versatile boats out there. I personally like the 22Ve over the 22V.

As far as maneuverability goes, all inboards are the same. You just need to get used to the fact that you may not be able to drive right into the exact position you want to be in right away. A little pratice and you'll be able to get it right. Just don't be afraid to shut off the engine a little early and pull yourself into the right spot

Not sure if you took your wife out on the 22V yet, but it was actually my wife who cinched my decision years ago for it's predecessor ('99 2100v Limited). The combination of storage, sundeck and great seating arrangement made it a no brainer for her.

After 7 years, it's still an awesome boat. I have added a few upgrades (tower, new stereo, PerfectPass, ballast, etc.).

I blamed the boat purchase as part of my ongoing mid-life crisis. My wife figured it was better than a younger version of her I, of course am milking it for all its worth!

I am just looking for now, been into the dealer numerous time. Personally I like what was done with the 22VE; the walk through in particular and the seat. I am looking at keeping what I have for this year but would be looking at selling in the spring or this fall; still working that angle and maybe order this fall. I will ask the dealer about after market ballast installation. He did not think I would need it with the taps system, hmmmm. The whole wakeboard thing with my son is not meant to go pro just learn bigger tricks and have fun at competitions and on the lake. I have not seen the 20V as none were on the showroom floor.

Man I hope to be keeping this boat for awhile; I can see it now "Honey I want a new boat ".
My wife is not much for operating the boat she is the spotter; she likes what we have and of course as my personal accountant has some finacial concerns.

Compared to what you have now, the 22 is cavernous, but you will find that it's sometimes nice to be able to seat 8-10 adults comfortably, especially for longer outtings on the water. As for the ballast, that's pretty easy to add. Remember, people make good ballast also. The wake on the 22Ve is impressive. We got to ride in one of the first ones made. Check out the pics of my son wakesurfing. We had no ballast on board.

You won't regret the extra space in the 22 over the 20. The wake is bigger also and you can pile more ballast in it.

Then you can look her straight in the eye and tell her, "Honey, I'll never ask for another one again."

Seriously, when you buy a boat like this, you'll use it more and you'll always be happy with it because you're not settling for something less.

My son tried wakesurfing last year at a demo and thought it was way to cool. Great photos by the way. Seems that the everyone seems to say go 22 as opposed to 20. More food for thought; I was kind of hoping the 20V would suffice.

Well, your getting your answers from a bunch of 22V Owners!

Honestly, it is the most popular Tige Model. And it will probably be the one with the highest resale..should you decide to sell it.

We are still getting used to the 22v being phased out in favor of the 22Ve, so forgive us for using those models interchangably.

If your going to sell in the fall, Spring boat show season is a good time to buy.. Lots of incentives with new boats. Lots of last year boats to be moved off the lot.

The 20v is a great boat. We need to get some of its owners to chime in for you to tell you their experiences.

                          BTW I own a 22V
