    2014 z1

    Hi all,

    I just made an offer on a 2014 Z1.

I want to be able to surf wakeboard and slalom so I really think this is the perfect boat.

However, after 10 years of pumping up and draining fat sacs I don't want anything to do with that anymore!! Question is with the convex vx and the pro ballast do you think I'll be happy with the wake as is?

Also, is there a big difference with the new surf remote link option?

    Thanks for all your help

    Slalom with a z1 ? Really?
Not able with mine. Wave look like a wall when i cross the boat. So
I do behind my friend nautique 200 and 2015 mastercraft ski boat.

I do all three behind mine and love it. My friends run Nautiques and Master Crafts, but when it is time to surf they all jump in my boat. You will have to really take some time to fine tune your wakeboard wake. The seating of people is critical in order to get a clean wakeboard wake, I struggled to find the right settings. Set the taps to 1 and run it and I get a pretty clean slalom wake. I have no extra ballast and no VX with the 1600# setup. If you have alot of people on the boat, it can create a larger wake like Dan C said. If you are going to slalom, try to limit the number of people on the boat.

As Clug mentioned, the wakeboard wake is very sensitive to weight (side to side). The surf wave will be decent with the pro ballast and the Convex VX. IF you search, you will find a fair amount of threads with most in agreement that with the VX, the boat does better with a little more weight (Enzo style bags from Chipthril or Wake9). However if you go with larger sacs, if you get too many people in the boat the wave becomes a wall. If you were to upgrade to Enzo sacs, you could fold the "leg" under the main body when you have more guests and still get a great wave. Don't get me wrong, the ballast upgrade to Enzo style sacs is NOT needed. The wave is very nice and very ride able with the Pro Ballast.

The Surf Link remote option is only available on the 2015 boats with AVX. It is a non-factor for 2014 boats with Convex VX. I believe you would be quite happy with the surf wave (at least initially) with the pro ballast and VX. Very clean, very nice!

I will echo most of what has been written above. We own a 2014 Z1 with the VX. I have the Surf (1600#) ballast and a manual fat sac under the seat on each side, but as Dandy mentioned, I plan on purchasing more weight (replacing the manual bags) eventually. We are happy with the wave so far, but still learning how to surf, so what do we know? I will say this though, get someone who knows what they are doing in your boat and it makes a WORLD of a difference. EWOK helped us tremendously... and will be helping us again in September at the Lake Mead Reunion - he just doesnt know it yet. Lastly, I have no problems with the slalom wake behind our boat. Granted, its not as nice as our 2004 22i for skiing - but it's not bad.

If you are an experienced surfer, you could probably surf the stock wake. However you will want more... If you are a newb (like I was) you won't go wireless until you add weight.

I usually have 4-5 people w me when I surf. I have 1600 pound ballast setup w no vx and I can surf fine. I was a total newb to surfing last year. What I found that helped me was make sure your around 20' deep water . Also the soul craft board I bought really seemed to help. You could always see if ragboy has any of those 1000 pound bags leftover that you just plug in if you need more weight. They jus take the place of the 350 pound rear bag.

Good point Chris. Vx needs more weight. We were able to surf without the Vx before adding weight.

The Z1 needs a tonne more of weight the surf ballast is not enough...with or without the Vx.... You need more.

We just spent a week surfing on our 2015 Z1 with the stock Surf X package and AVX. We're new to the sport and really enjoyed it. Since we're beginners, we may not know what we're missing and maybe the advanced surfers need more weight, but for us amateurs, the wake seemed fine and provided many hours of enjoyment for adults as well as the kids.

We didn't use the AVX remote. Once I sat the AVX, we didn't change it very often.

We also slalom skied. While the wake isn't flat, once you get to 30+ MPH it's fairly soft and is still much better than my old 21' I/O.

No boat is perfect for all things, but the Z1 does many things well. Overall, I think you'll love the boat.

Thanks all. It's 2014 z1 with the pro ballast not the surf xl. I think it's 2000 pounds worth.

Just not, that total ballast option is not whats going to be used for surfing. A likely surf ballast config would be only 1400 with pro or 1000 with surf option.

I have 1400 total pounds in my RZR for surfing (400 bow bag and 1000 surf corner). If there's a light crew I have a 400 I can put on the floor for 1800 . Z1 definitely needs more surf weight. My starting point on Z1 would be 400 front surf side full, front non surf side half, rear surf corner 1200 lbs. Just my opinion.

Not sure how ive got them backwards, as Pro level ballast is more then the Surf level

Pro would be 800 bow and 600 in each rear corner for a total of 2000, minus the 600 off-side rear that would likely not be used = 1400?

Surf level is 400 bow and 600 each rear corner for a total of 1600, minus the 600 off-side rear that would likely not be used = 1000?

My weekend is well underway, so someone double check my math
