2008 22VE 5.7 GM Vortec In Line Water Filter

Has anyone put an inline water filter on the 5.7 GM Vortec? The dealer said all I have to do is put it in the input line before the motor. I have no clue which line is the input. Does anyone have a diagram of the motor detailing the parts?

Find the main intake on the bottom of the boat. Probably has a mushroom thru hull which is most likely on the right side of the motor. The hose then loops over to the front where the main intake is.

Most are set up the same way. There will be a (probably) 1.25 inch heavy hose coming off a thruhull under or near the engine. On a Tige v-drive boat, that hose will likely go first to your v-drive, then to the transmission intercooler, then to the impeller pump on the engine. You are concerned with the section coming off the thruhull, so that your filter will be the first thing the fresh water coming into the boat encounters. In other words, your filter should be installed in the hose connected directly to the thruhull.

What sort of hose are people using for cooling mods?, given it needs to not collapse.

Mine is labeled right on it. My boat is covered and it's raining right now or I'd go check, but IIRC it's labeled "marine heater hose" or something like that. It's definitely reinforced... Ewok here was working on his about a week ago (we have same-year boats) and found it has a heavy spiral wire reinforcement that was unpleasant to cut through. Wall thickness feels like at least a quarter inch. I think he said it was $10/foot when he bought some for his project.

I would think 1-1/4 hydraulic suction hose would work just fine, and any hydraulic shop would have it, it has the steel cord in it so won't collapse

I got some from the House of Hose in Spokane, WA, but you should be able to find some at Westmarine. It's 1-1/4" inner diameter and it should be reinforced so it will not collapse. I used USCG Approved hose and that's why it's more expensive.

Now think this through, you have idled across some weeds and your filter gets clogged. If you mount the filter below the waterline you won't be able to take it off and clean it out without lots of water running into your boat. But since you are messing with adding more hose to mount the strainer higher, you might as well put a shutoff valve on the thruhull since I can almost garuntee you don't have one. The thruhull is not a 1.25" thruhull, it's probably a 1". I learned this the hard way by ordering a 1.25" brass marine shutoff valve and then learned it's too big. The local hardware store doesn't have the right thread pattern so I have to order a new 1" valve from my marine supplier, Chpthrill.

Long story short, use USCG Approved hose, use marine brass valve with correct thread pattern.

Opened up the boat today. Hose is made by Tuder Italy. It's called ShieldsFlex II Marine Wet Exhaust/Water. Has an SAE number of J2006R2. I have several sizes in my engine compartment including 1.25 for the fresh water lines and 4.0 coming off the exhaust manifold to the muffler.

Inside diameter. You can order it from many sources online, it's a very common hose type.
