    Faria speedo troubleshooting

    Hi everyone,

I just bought a new (to me) 2006 22ve. When we did the test drive the speedometer and speedset worked flawlessly. We drove it 500 miles to my house, then on the first time out the speedo did not budge. It spent most of the day at 0, then I noticed when I was going to trailer the boat it was stuck on 8mph no matter what speed I was at. Right now in my driveway the needle is pointing to the area of 10mph, and it doesn't move when I turn the key on. Speed Set not working as well. At first I thought it might of sprung a loose connection on the trip home but now I'm not too sure.

I checked the transducer, I get 11.4 volts when I check between the red wire and the ground wire in the Airmar cable. I put my leads on the green wire and the ground wire and had my fiancé turn the paddlewheel at 1/4 turn increments and the meter reads 11v then 0v then 11v then 0v for every revolution. I double checked this right at the guage and its getting a signal there as well so therefore I can rule out the transducer.

I checked power coming into the gauge as well, there is power there, plus it sends a quick beep and the depth display works so I don't think its a power issue.

So my question is, how do you know when a gauge is faulty and needs to be replaced? Do you think this needs replacement? it seems funny that it was working a week ago and now it isn't. Does the engine have to be running for the speedometer to register? Will the needle jump back down to 0 as soon as I start the engine?

Also, does any one know how speed set gets its input? Does the green wire split and connect with the speedset separate from the speedometer, or does the speed set plug into the speedometer and get its input from the speedo?

Addition: I just found the wiring diagram for the harnesses attached to the Speedo. One is power, ground, and speed input. The other is the depth finder. Since there is no wire going to speedset, is it fair to say speedset could work independently from the speedometer. So even if the speedometer was faulty, speed set should work no?

I doubt the Faria speedo is bad. The wheels go bad before the gauge. However If you troubleshoot that gauge is bad they are lifetime warranty. I had a similar issue last year but mine is a 05 and has perfect pass vs Speedset. I knew I was going to have to buy new a new transducer so instead I bought the GPS kit from www.nauticlogic.com. My speedo, PP iPhone GPS are exact of each other. Best mod for the money and literally only took 15 min to instal. Also even a new paddle wheel is not the best and can jump around due to water chop. GPS is the only way to go. Best of luck

I'm in the same situation with mine. I strongly believe it's the transducer. Can I just buy the Nauticlogic unit to get it working without fixing the transducer? Depth guage still works on my Tige. Seems like a cheaper fix than a new transducer.

Yes. Buy it! It's worth the money. I did have some issues at first but after some calls and emails they got it working perfectly. The issues weren't theirs but my boat.

im not sure if its the transducer for me. Ive tested the green wire all the way to the speedometer and I'm getting voltage changes from 11v to 0v for every 1/4 turn of the paddle wheel. I was hoping it was the transducer, since then I could go the Nautilogic route and be done with it. I'm thinking its a gauge issue for me.

the only thing I don't get, is that the gauge is faulty, speedset should still work no? the green wire splits and goes to the accuset. If the transducer was good, speedset should work.

Emailed them and got the same answer. I ordered from them yesterday. Can't wait to get it installed on my Z1. Thanks for posting this. This replacement is actually a lot cheaper than the cost of a new transducer.
