    Starting Issues

I have a 2000 2300V Limited with the Black Scorpion motor. Today was the third time we have been out this season. Usually the boat will start fairly quick, just a crank or two and she fires up. I noticed today when I first started it when it was cold, it took a few extra cranks. We puttered out at a slow speed since we just got the FAE installed and it calls for low speeds at first. Probably ran about 5, 10 mins tops and shut it down and floated for awhile. Started back up fine and we ran back to the dock at around 15 mph to meet some friends. The line at the dock we horrendous so we had to sit and idle for about 20 mins waiting. Finally got in and there was some issues with their boat so we shut down to help. After about 10 mins or so we were ready to go. Went to start it up and it just cranked and cranked and cranked. Tried to sputter a couple of times bit wouldn't start. Could start to smell gas when it finally caught and sputtered to life.

Temp was fine, never got hot. Once it started it ran fine, no issues there. Put a new fuel/water separator filter on it at the beginning of the season. Didn't get check the plugs after we got in so not sure how they look. This is only our third season with the boat and never had starting issues with it.

Not really sure where to start to diagnose.

On a side note, the FAE sure was nice! Can't believe how much more quiet the boat is.

Same boat with same issue. I installed my FAE late in the season of 2013, after having it all last season I just grew acustomed to the extra cranking.

Look at the inside of the distributor cap for corrosion.

Good to know this... Just ordered my FAE for my 2001 2100v with the 350 Mag/MPI.. Did you end up pulling it outta the water before surfing to retighten everything on the system? I am looking forward to the reduced emissions and noise for my riders!

Are you thinking the FAE is the reason for the extra cranking before firing up?

I don't see why the FAE would have anything to do with it myself. It is odd that it started to do this the first time out though....

I did not pull it out before surfing. A. The dock was too busy and B. it said in the instructions not to go over 15 mph first time out and we never did that the whole time out.

Will try to check dist. cap this week and see how it looks.

I did alot of playing with my FAE, taking it on and off, adjusting up and down. And when ever it was off it never took a whole lot of cranking to start. That led me to believe the FAE was putting some more back pressure on the exhaust. It does push the exhaust lower into the water and you don't get the venturi effect when starting so it must put some more backpressure on the exhaust when starting. For every foot of water it's .443# of pressure so definitly not much.

Well the distributor cap was a mess! I kinda feel embarrassed not going their first. In the driveway she first up almost instantly. Need to get it back out in the water to see if the FAE makes any difference regarding additional back pressure as stated above. I'll probably replace the distributor cap anyway as I'm assuming it is original. Wouldn't hurt.

Thought I would throw this in here...

Our first trip with the FAE installed and I definitely noticed a couple extra "cranks" before the boat fired up. It didn't happen until out on the lake, so warmed up for sure - didn't notice it when we launched.

It was noticeable enough that even my wife said something about. I just don't understand how the FAE could be affecting this - anyone have any ideas?

it is due to the extra back pressure the more bends and turns you put in exhaust the more back pressure it adds also. i cant really tell in the pictures but it looks like the down pipe is the same size as the rest of the piping so you are chocking the exhaust up there too because youre shoving twice as much air into the same size pipe long or not so this will cause more back pressure also. more back pressure equals harder to start

Here is a link to the most current topic regarding this issue I am having:

Talking with Larry at FAE, it is something more than back pressure. I understand there will be an extra crank or two, but not a continual cranking (excessive) to get it to sputter to life. After a new battery it cranks 100 times better, will quickly start then die and has to crank forever to start. To me it seems like it might be a fuel issue, either pump or pressure. Not quite sure. I'm still lost on this.

Ive owned an FAE on my own boat and installed a few and have not noticed any change in starting. Heres a back pressure experiment that can be run on your own vehicle. With a helper, take a large shop rag and cover the tail pipe (more restriction then the FAE). Have helper fire up engine. It takes a LOT of restriction to effect an engine and low RPM.

I hear ya chp - I'm not positive I would have ever noticed if these other people were not seeing the same thing. I do know, however, that it wasn't all in my mind (as my wife also noticed it)

hopps - It definitely sounds like you have something with the fuel going on. I'm certainly not an expert, but it sure sounds like a fuel pump issue...Hopefully someone will chime in with more answers.

I hope you get it figured out soon! Keep updating - I sure am curious to this FAE extra cranking...
