Hey gang. I need to talk with people who already goes to lake Powell.
We are thinking to get there next year.
Its a long trip from here so we want to get more info we can (8500km). We are from east Canada

What time is the best to go
Where on lake powell
Where to rent houseboat
Maybe some of you can help on witch road take or not
So much question to come!

I think the best time to go is September. Less crowds, still warm water and cooler nights.
You would probably access the Northern part of the lake and I don't know anything about that area.
You will love it! Others will chime in for sure.

Teamallen is right that the northern part of the lake is probably best for you. There are three marinas there with only two that are operating at this time. The Hite marina is closed until water levels rise enough and that wont happen for the next little while. That will leave Bullfrog and Halls Crossing. They are across the bay from each other and Bullfrog is the more popular.

I agree with teamallen that September is awesome. It will save some you some money on rentals as well. The weather is fantastic water temps are still in the low 80's-high 70's. To get pricing on housebaoats go to lakepowell.com They usually have some deals for the off season or if you are willing to prepay you can save sometimes as much as 40%. Lake Powell

I have two week off every end of july. Will weather be too hot? We are thinking to rent houseboat. Is that the best thing to do ?

Will looking for september if you say it would be better!

Dan. I personally love going in the middle to end of July. It is hot but still awesome. Costs will be a little higher bc it is the peak season.

I have never rented a houseboat because of the cost. Lots of people camp. (Can be hot all night long). We stay in what they call the family units (they are a three bedroom two bath single wide trailer). They run about $350 a night. The other option is to rent a place at defiance house lodge. ( hotel type setup). The lodge is about $175 per night.

Keep in mind that there are not very good shopping options in bullfrog or halls crossing so you would really need to pack in most of your food. Depending on how you drive down you could get food supplies in Utah or Colorado.

If you go to the south end of the lake out of page Arizona you will find a full town with grocery stores and theaters and all you might expect in a town. But it will add a few more hours to your drive down.

Dan, I agree with 25 the north end is closer by about 5 hours depending on your route but is very limited on the supply front. Going down to page gives many more options with the Wahweap Lodge or motels in page. You also have 2 options on houseboat rentals at the south end Aramark or www.lakepowell.com or the Antelope Point www.lakepowellhouseboating.com/. If you plan on the page route you can even order food online and have it delivered on the houseboat for fee. Hope this helps FYI this is my family's favorite vacation spot we go every year. We went last July - great time - rented a discovery XL out of bullfrog - worked out great for 10 of us - only downside really was it was HOT and camp spots were initially slim picking - once camped hardly ever saw anyone when surfing, fishing etc - only when we went to ruins and site seeing - we stayed about 3/4 of the way to good hope bay in a small canyon near tapestry wall on the west side of channel that the map noted as not having a camp spot but it was awesome - also only about 30 mins ride back halls for ice cream etc day trip. South of halls has some awesome spots too so just get a map and have a plan before you get there as to which direction you might want to go - don't be afraid to get away from marina a bit as that's what Powell is all about - Get on houseboat rental site and check dates literally by the day - we got a big break just by going in on a Thursday vs weekend - and definitely agree with preload deal - well worth it and out early the next morning - days were hot but you are in the water most of the time if you have to go in July/August - check out waynes words website too for fishing, camping info too - good map info etc links there too. Enjoy- you will love it - sunsets and sunrises are hard to beat at Powell!

When we say hot, we are talking 105 degrees sometimes. But there is a near infinite supply of water to cool off in.

I think most of RyanMorgan's challenges are things I have never faced. Our houseboat has a chest freezer on the front, and I buy a few blocks of ice to start the week with and throw in multiple cases of water to the freezer and use those as mini-ice blocks to keep the coolers cold. Most decent sized boats will also have 2 refridgerator/freezers in them too.

I never anchor my boat against the houseboat. There is not a no wake zone where you camp, and there are surfing idiots that seem to think surfing right near a houseboat's anchoring location is OK. I suspect that you know how to properly anchor an inboard boat separate from the houseboat. It takes some extra setup time, but has been well worth it to me, when Wally Surfer starts surfing 50 feet away from me.

The best time is in September, but July is hardly bad by any means. The people you rent from should teach you how to anchor a houseboat. Storms can come up that time of year that are almost tornado like. They come up with short warning, but can pack winds that are 60 MPH or more. That houseboat seems to act like a big giant sail. I had my houseboat come off its anchors last year and it ain't fun. Another reason to never have your boat attached to the houseboat.

My family believes that there is not a better place on earth.

Could not agree more with Tall about anchoring the houseboat. Two years ago there was a storm that popped up out of nowhere. We were in Padre Canyon, and it was chaotic to say the least. The wind picked up a glass table on the front of our houseboat and shattered it against one of the support poles and glass was strewn on the beach. I spent the next several days with my kids sand toys sifting glass out of the sand. It also ripped my anchors out as well, but fortunately it just turned the houseboat sideways on the beach. We had confirmed 56 mph gusts where we were. Multiple houseboats in our area were bouncing off rocks, and other boats. It lasted for several hours. So you can never be too anchored in my opinion. I always start out with six ropes coming off the houseboat, and usually by the time I leave I have eight, sometimes more. I'm sure everyone has stories they can tell about windstorms at Lake Powell, but like Tall said, it is not fun at all when that happens.

I'd love to visit Lake Powell. Its about a 20 hour tow without stops from my house. That is a pretty brutal trip...

Go to Powell! Just got back yesterday and it was unseasonably cool last week. 80's air temp a couple of days and water was 80. Couldn't be better but it is typically much hotter.
