    boat prop taxes

Here in Calif just make sure that you do not have the price of the trailer included in your assesed value of the boat. The gov't is very happy to include the total cost of purchase in their assesment excluding sales tax. In most case the boat and trailer are sold together and there is one price. You need to make sure that the value of the trailer is subrtracted from the total cost and that you are assesed only on the boat. If you have a new boat and are getting your first property tax bill compare the cost to the assesed value.

Property tax on a boat! I knew that CA taxed cars based on their value but did not know about boats.

Here in TN my car registration is $24.00 a year and my boat registration is $56.00 for three years. And we do not have to register the trailer and do not need license plates on the trailer. We do have to pay sales tax on the boat and trailer.

If you have property tax file for a lower valuation.

In Ca. they use NADA to value when you dispute. This is one time the lower values can help. I was able to speak to the adjuster on the phone and walk her through a lower valuation based on NADA.

Thanks for the tips, gman and David. Good timing as I just got my first tax bill for $500+, and the assessed value did look high.

The taxes in CA suck, but I guess that's the price for living in paradise (too bad it takes me 5+ hours to get to a decent lake from paradise).

No doubt. I'm glad I live next door to Ca and not in it. That place is absurd. It seems to be the one state that regularly bends it's residents over the counter. I don't know how you people do it.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

I live in California, but I register the boat in Arizona, since I do most of my boating that State. I don't get hit for the property tax.

I also register in Arizona as I do all my boating there. They just raised the non resident registration though. Its like $270 /yr now but still cheaper than the 1% California Personal Property Tax
                      Let it be!!!

Ditto...we have always registered in AZ. Don't forget...you pay your registration in Cali and the property tax and the registration isn't that much cheaper than in AZ. The legal test is if you do more than 50% of your boating in Arizona. That's an easy one for us to be honest and truthful on...we boat almost exclusively at one of the River lakes... 234 to register our new boat in AZ...

Wrangler - Did you pay sales tax (aka use tax) when you bought your boat and registered in AZ?

David...I paid sales tax in California where I purchased the boat. AZ wanted a copy of the sales contract showing that I had paid sales tax somewhere...they didn't require it to be in AZ.
