It like that on a RZ2 and Z1 that I looked at this week.

I don't think strength is an issue though. Wave maker mounts the actuator parallel to the tabs which is the weakest position possible and it seams to work well for them.

It looks like I should have room to mount Lencos longest actuator with a stroke of 4.5" to the transom. I think it looks a lot better this way. I just don't know if I need the tab to go that far below the bottom of the hull. My currant taps plate uses a 2.5" stroke bennet actuator and only goes a little bit below the hull. I think I want the new ones to go further but I don't know if I need it to.

Well I went to the local tige dealer today, only to find out they are no longer a tige dealer. So I'm getting nowhere fast in getting measurements for the taps 3 tabs.
Looks like my car project will be at sheet metal for a bit longer so I'm thinking about bringing the boat in now and doing this. I just need help with the demensions I put up a few posts ago. Anyone one willing to help out?

The ones on the RZX are bigger than the others. I am not sure if they would work the same. I would seam you would want dimensions from a Z1 or Z3 TAPS3 plates.

This is all a guess with my hull. The Lencos kit I will buy comes with a set of 12x12 trim tabs. So I will have them and the set I will build. I'd like the the rzx tabs as I would then have kind of both extremes. But I'm guessing here. I got a sheet of stainless on sale so I'm ready to cut it up as soon as I can get some demensions.

Well I made the drive to a new tige dealer today. They had an rzx and a z3 with taps3. They were identical minus the mounting, but size wise they were the same. I got all measurements I need. I need to order all the lenco parts and get the tabs drawn up. TAPS21 has begun!

Are you going to put the lip on the side of the plates?

Yes. The design is such that it really pushes water down and to the outside. The lips are needed.

Yes, that is what I was saying, they are unique and the design seems to work well.

Any progress on this? I'd love to do some experiments but it probably won't be till much later this season.

I am mostly happy with a listed boat. I'd mostly want the tabs so that I could make minor adjustments. As ragboy said, people move around, water conditions change. I'd just want to be able to refine my listed wave. I may not need a full tab, but just a minor aileron if you will.

What I want to try is keeping my Vx and adding surf tabs too. I think it can be done. In my opinion Tigé will eventually combine the AVx and the TAPS3.

I took a look at most of the boats at the boat show to see the variations. Everyone has a minor twist. Even Four Winns is running surf plates with their backwards Stern drive.

4Winns has a ways to go--as do the forward drive entrants in general. They make a surfable wave, but not much more. I think the drive holds promise.

Those tabs are way too inboard to be effective, mainly due to adapting them to an existing hull. If they started at the drawing board then things might blossom.

An interesting sidenote, my marine mechanic told me he has a customer that bought a wave control system from wake makers and wants him, the mechanic, to install it on a 28 foot Sea Ray with twin inboard/outboard. This is the kind of random haphazard experimentation that is going on out there, people don't quite get it, but they want to surf anyway. There propellers make me cringe, although it is probably not going to happen, it still would make me nervous. Especially with the twin engines. You know they're going to try it.

The Four Winns idea is a neat one. All the credit for trying. Even their seating layout is pretty cool. Full marks for giving it a go.

The video they posted showed a pretty substandard wave. But I'm sure we all started with an I/O somewhere along the line. Hell I tried surfing my Larson 19ft I/O for a full season before I gave up and bought the Tigé.

I had a thought..... Buy one of those Ronix surf wedges and rather than sticking it to the hull, stick it to the bottom of the Vx. That would at least help determine if my idea has merit.

4Winns is not alone, I have seen surf boats from them, Bryant, and Cobalt so far.....possibly one more. Moneterey maybe? They all have recognized the potential market and have teamed with volvo with the forward drive. I know the 25' Cobalt surf offering is something like $133K base msrp or something. Its quite substantial.

They use lots of tricky photography to not ever really show the wave for very long. They're surfable, and small.
However, give them a few years. We might have something to consider here as they figure this out. It all depends how many people get talked into these units.
