Engine over heating

Have an issue with the engine over heating, when I would sit idle temp alarm would go off. Soon as I started to drive temp went back down. When sitting idle I rev the engine and temp stayed down. I found another post with this issue and impeller was the problem. Checked impeller this moring and its in good shape. I did notice when I went to take off impeller cover there are four screws, one was missing, second was almost out, third screw was loose and fourth tight. Could this be the problem? my thinking is if the cover not sealed at idle not enough suction to draw up the water fast enough. At higher rpm the cover would seal. Looking at this possibility before I start pulling hoses to see if any blockage.

You have an air leak in the circulation system. It could be the bolts you mentioned or the numerous other items. Go back and start at the through hull and work your way forward. Check for an o-ring the water separator and tightness as well. Whoever messed with the raw water pump last did not do you any favors by leaving it half *** together.

@Paxdad nailed it. I had this same issue over the weekend. In my case I believe the cause was a cracked raw water strainer (the clear cylinder that water flows throw to strain out debris). I was able to superglue it back together, but I ordered a spare just in case.

In your case, I'd definitely start with the impeller housing. Make sure the gasket is still in tact and get all those screws in there. If that doesn't fix it - before you go pulling things apart, check to see if you notice water dripping from any hose connections, impeller housing, etc. Good luck!

It could be milfoil clogged in your water inlet, or if you have a strainer it might be full. Happens to me like every other week on Lake Sammamish in Washington. Our seaweed is nuts here, and always gets sucked up. I have a strainer, just unscrew, empty, screw back on, good to go!

Do you happen to have a Perko flush kit? I ask because I put one in a couple years back before I winterized in the fall. I inserted the valve at the top that keeps the hose connection open and connected a short piece of hose to remain attached at all times (allows me to connect a garden hose standing outside of the boat instead of climbing down into the locker next to the engine compartment). Anyway, when you do this you have to cap the end of the hose otherwise the Perko valve will suck air when sitting or driving at idle speed. First time out in the spring and I received temp warnings when I wasn't moving. As soon as I capped the hose extension my problem was solved. I hope your problem is as simple as mine was. I had the same issue, it seemed like the impeller was fine but I discovered down he road that the center section was spinning inside the impeller. For the price it is worth changing the impeller out.
