Thinking about relocating the family to lake Travis. Can anyone tell me how it is there? Best areas to live, schools....etc. Need to extend our season a little. 2 months of warm water are not enough!

We are in Marble Falls just above Travis in the Colorado River chain of lakes. Travis is low right now and has been for years. Lake LBJ is a constant level lake because of the power plant. It's about 21 miles long and has wind protection in many areas. So you have Lake Buchanan which is low. Inks lake constant level,Lake LBJ constant level,Marble Falls constant level. Then Lake Travis currently 22 foot low.I do all my own stunt work. hey ya'll watch dis.

Just keep traffic in mind if commuting is at all of a concern. We have friends that live in Steiner Ranch near lake Austin and they say the commute back to Austin is a pain. Like Robert said, Travis is still really low and unless you have a slip or dry dock your boat getting on there may be impossible. I did hear rumors that after this past 2 weeks of rain they may be opening a ramp back up.
LBJ is great is a great lake. A bit of a drive for us out here in Round Rock so we usually end up at Georgetown and Lake Austin.

Palle Man, there are a ton of places to live in and around Lake Travis. Lake Travis is big; it is not constant level, it was built to mediate the flow of water through the Lower Colorado and prevent the City of Austin from being wipe out from floods. It is a primary source of potable water in the area.
The school district is great, very highly ranked in Texas and nationally. There are lots of communities, from small towns to subdivisions. Lakeway, Lago Vista, Spice Wood, etc, etc.. If looking towards the eastern/southern extent of the lake you are close to Austin and right on top of Lake Austin as well.
Some communities are urban to semi-urban others are decidedly rural.
The best thing to do is visit and get to know the area. Housing is not cheap, relatively speaking. Some may still find the Austin area affordable, but most do not.
Lake Travis has come up a little over 7 feet in the past few months, and currently sits about 36 feet below the seasonal average level and about 47 feet below full.
Like Robert said, Marble Falls sits about Lake Travis. The lake is a constant level, flow through cell, the community is rural with a small town center, some fun little joints, and few chains and lots of surrounding ranches.

I recently moved to Hudson Bend located on the southern side of Lake Travis near the Mansfield Dam. If your looking for a great place to live, great schools and a wide variety of jobs the area in Lakeway TX is great. You can easily access Lake Travis, Lake Austin and close to other lakes in the area. I would suggest the Lakeway area above any other due to being close enough to all the cool things in Austin and traffic is low in this area compared to other parts of Austin. I wouldn't suggest a waterfront on Lake Travis or keeping the boat in a slip on Travis. If I'm surfing I goto Lake Austin due to the hills blocking the wind and smoother water. You can find areas on Travis that are smooth, but you can always find good water on Lake Austin even on VERY busy weekends. Lake Austin has a high volume of water sports and wake surfing has been growing on the lake exponentially over the past few years. On weekdays you will always find smooth water on Lake Austin.
I've lived in various spots in Austin the past few years and finally settled in the Lakeway area. We considered moving away from Austin to the Lake LBJ and Marble Falls area, but decided against it due to being too far away from the great things Austin has to offer. The schools were a big factor for us as well and taxes in some areas are not too bad. You definitely should rent a place to start with and make sure you like the area. Rentals are reasonable right now, however with Lake Travis on the rise the rental rates will also be rising.
Good luck,
Chris
