Prop Puller

I'm wanting to change my prop out on my Z1. Can it be done without a puller? If not where can I get one cheap I never change props so not wanting to spent a lot. Thanks

You might try a local prop shop. They may either let you borrow or rent one? Maybe another member, near you, can lend you a puller?
I have seen a few guys make/weld one out of a c clamp. I think they are less than $100. Contact Chpthril if you choose to buy one.

Here's a link about a prop puller I built cheap and it works fine. I doubt you will get that prop off without destroying it and the shaft without a puller. They seat themselves on the tapered part of the shaft pretty hard. Pullers are expensive to own but I use mine 1-2 times a year since our lake is low that is and the wife likes to hit things!

I bought one of those and on my RZR with only a few hours it was "no bueno". Wasn't room to really swing a hammer at it and it didn't work. It was cheap and the prop shop I bought it from said they worked as long at the prop wasn't really stuck. I couldn't make it work on a prop with only 20 hours run time. Might be more swinging room on a Z1.

If you are going to own two props, you should own a puller. I thought about going cheap but went ahead and bought puller. I can change the prop in 10 minutes. If you think you have a problem, or just want to change props for surfing or cruising, its no big deal.

I gonna change mine out tomorrow using the acme harmonic puller. I'm going from the 537 to the 1433. I have never changed my props out the dealer has always done it for me. Looks to be very simple.

The harmonic puller works well if you have the stones to swing a 3lb sledge that close to the rudder. Its the one use in the shop. The c-clamp style is a little easier and usually a little less invasive.

Just heat prop a little with torch and they come right off

This might be a good reminder to put a thin layer of bearing grease on your shaft and you will find 2 years later when you remove the prop that you don't have to work as hard. But don't worry, the nut and key are what hold your prop in place, not the friction between the shaft and prop. That is just what makes them very difficult to remove.

I made one out of an old c clamp. I ground off the fixed end of the clamp so it would rest against the prop shaft and put pressure on the back of the prop hub. Then I cut off the foot of the threaded end which has a ball on it. I then thighten that ball end into the end of the prop shaft. Last hit it the back side of the puller with a hammer to pop the prop off. Make sure to leave the prop nut still on the shaft but loose.
