I may buy one and use my go pro and the camera on the drone. Maybe able to get creative with video from two different angles.

My 13YO son has been flying RC helicopters and quadracopters since before they were (mistakenly, IMO) called "drones". A couple of years ago he was buying $10 el cheapo SDCard cameras off eBay, taping them to his RC's, and flying them around the neighborhood. He even submitted one such video as a homework project.

He too already has a GoPro camera. His current project is low-balling larger quadracopters on eBay. Once he gets one, he's going to strip out all the electronics and install them on a carbon fiber framework of his own construction to drive the weight down to the bare minimum. The idea is to increase its payload capacity so he can use his existing GoPro with it. I love that he wants to do this kind of stuff instead of just sit around playing video games.

I decided to roll the dice and order one. Today is the last day to, supposedly, get the original price.

I got in on this the last day for the February shipment. Pretty excited about this actually. I can only imagine what version 2 and so on will offer like obstacle avoidance, replaceable batteries etc.

I know, it's a tough call, but the price might reflect all of those enhanced features?

Obstacle avoidance is a big miss for me. Not that it is that important when filming surfing sessions, but to not be able to launch the Lily in my street or else without it running into trees and wires is a concern.

It's up to $699 until August 15th and will ship in May. I wonder how the sales are going and if anyone has bought in after the initial purchase point?

                      Survey Results!

For this week's update, we thought that it might be interesting to share some of the things we learned from the Lily community in last week's survey.
Most of you (78%) currently use your phone as your primary recreational camera
Customers are evenly split (42% each!) between primarily using Lily with family and using Lily for outdoor sports. Right now, 8% of you are planning to use Lily professionally
Here are the top places where you are planning to take Lily:
                      Filmmaking
                      Special and Family Events
                      Boating
                      Skiing or Snowboarding
                      Running or Biking
54% of you are planning to use Lily at least once a week
The most popular accessory requests were for a fast or car charger and a hard travel case

After this weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks Tige Reunion, I'm pretty sure that everyone would agree that a waterproof drone is a good idea.

X20 on that statement! Jake from Performancemarineloz lost control of his around $3000.00 drone and it went blackhawk down in the water!! In pieces and sunk fast! Ouch!
So no drone video of the RZX wave yet

If you ordered one or have another one you need to register it https://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/
If you register before midnight EST, January 20th, 2016 your $5 registration fee will be refunded!

You don't need to have your drone in hand. I just did it yesterday. Pretty painless.

My family is heavily involved in RC aircraft and is tracking this situation closely. There is a lot of controversy surrounding this registration and the current advice is to WAIT. The industry's advocacy group highlights things in this article, but here is an extract:

The new registration rule runs counter to Congress’ intent in Section 336 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, otherwise known as the “Special Rule for Model Aircraft.” The central issue is whether the FAA has the authority to expand the definition of aircraft to include model aircraft; thus, allowing the agency to establish new standards and operating criteria to which model aircraft operators have never been subject to in the past.
The central issue is that Congress passed a law that specifically prohibits the FAA from requiring registration of model aircraft. With this "drone registration" action, the FAA appears to have violated that law. There is litigation pending on the topic, and Congress may address it when they come back into session this month. They may choose to leave the law as-is, in which case the FAA will have to scrap their existing plan. They may instead choose to alter the law to remove the prohibition against the FAA and allow them to do what they are legally prohibited from doing at present. They may stay out of it and let the courts decide. Nobody knows how it will turn out. As a result, the AMA suggests adopting a "wait and see" attitude rather than dumping your personal data into another public, and publicly searchable, database.

Obviously make your own decisions, but at least be fully informed!
