New Z1 owner - battery charging at home

Just took delivery on a new Z1. Looking forward to getting it in the water. But until I do, I wanted to make sure the batteries are charged and ready to go. It has the dual battery option and as I was taking delivery, the mechanic mentioned that I shouldn't charge the batteries while they are in the boat. There's also a warning sticker on the access door.

But then he said that if I use a 2 bank charger, it would be OK.

Anybody know anything about the best way to keep the batteries charged while the boat sits in my garage?

I use a trickle charger in my Z1. It turns it self off once battery is charged. I don't remove batteries, just leave hatch open to allow batteries to breath.

If it has factory on board charger you're fine

What does this mean by factory on board charger? I could not understand it.

          Z1owner,

Charge in your garage with caution at and your own risk. That warning sticker is is there because many large shop type chargers have the capacity to charge in excess of 16V. If you are confident of the chargers operating range, then you can leave the batteries in the boat while charging. If you install a marine on-board smart charger, again, you are safe to charge the batteries while left in the boat.

Buy a marine smart charger like this and install in the boat. You plug it in when you get home (or back to the dock) and you are good to go next time out.

I think Tige may install something like this from factory, so that is what patryk was referring to. It would be on your build sheet (and obviously in your boat somewhere). There would be an AC power cord back by the motor somewhere.

Thanks to all for your answers. The mechanic seemed more worried about the electronics on the boat than the batteries.

My Z1 didn't come with a factory installed charger, so looks like I'll need to install one myself. Thanks for the recommendation on the NOCO.

                  Thanks chpthril,

I'm upgrading from a 20 year old 5.7 Mercruiser where things were simple....just a single battery, starter, carbureted engine, lights and radio......

I haven't been in the new boat business for 20 years, so I guess I'm overly cautious with all the new electronics that I haven't been around yet.

If you purchase and install a 2 bank charger, just hook it directly to the batteries and make sure your battery selector switch is off. This will protect all circuits and components beyond the the shut off. You can purchase a 2 bank charger at any marine store or Bass pro shop. It can easily be mounted on the rear wall of your Z1 and like I said when you get home from the lake make sure your battery selector is set to off and plug in the charger.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I've ordered a 2 bank charger and agree that it will make my life much easier.

                        good idea man!

The isolator will keep everything separate except the bilge pump. That is a good thing!

I installed a Promariner 20 on my last boat and had great results with it.

This time I left the Factory Promariner 12...3 year warranty is nice!
