    Nub from Nashville

    Hi fellow boaters,

I need a little help in asking the right questions. I'm going to look at a 2003 22v with 350 hours on a 335 HP from a private seller this weekend and want to know what to ask specific to in-boards. I know things like, maintenance/service records but never owned this type of boat. We plan to do test ride and other than the obvious is there anything specific to the Tige's that I need to know?

Be kind, Thanks for your help

last impellar change? Last Oil Change. past issues... replacement of parts, engine ext...
trailer brakes \ hubs in good shape? Oil bath bearing leaking?
look under the boat.. for hard trailering ext... or beach wear...
look in the bilge... see if its a mess maybe signs of engine issues. or neglect.... some owners here you could eat off the bilge floor. they are that anal.

verify electronics work. Tower mounts secure, good shape ext... gel cracks or wear pionts ... hinges in good shape.. interior in good shape.... trailer bunks need any love? trailer tires need replacing.... cracking \ wear.. ext...

go through the power band in the motor a few times.. from hard hole shots to easy stop and go....

listen for V-drive noises when doing the step above... make sure no vibration or when running the boat ie.. good prop and drive shaft.

All good suggestions above. And if you want to dig deeper, get into the engine a bit since that's where the big money is:

          1) Pull the dipstick, wipe oil, check for color, contaminants, metal particles

          2) Pull one or more plugs, examine for standard four-stroke appearance (tells you what's happening in the cylinders)

          3) Bring a compression tester and check compression on all cylinders (combine with examining plugs)

          4) Remove whatever protective cover is there and look at the throttle body intake, should be clean

          5) Dip the transmission and v-drive fluids, examine for proper appearance and levels

I'd also climb under the hull while on the trailer and look for ANY sign of them running over something like a rock or log. The running gear (fins, propshaft, strut, prop, rudder) should not have any "mystery marks" on them. Nor should the gelcoat down there have any gouges. A few light scratches might happen from trailer loading/unloading, but anything noticeable is cause for concern.

Others will chime in with their favorite hotspots. You can pick and choose what you want to examine. It takes me several hours to really go through a used boat but I'm really picky. Then again, I've never been disappointed when I've chosen to buy something used, either. Do your homework up front and it will save you headaches later.

If the hours seem low for that year of boat, you may want to check the motors ECM. I have read here on the forum that the gauge can reset to zero and show lower than the engines actual hours.

Thanks guys, and a great big thank you to Lee for his time and patience while I ask a butt load of questions AND, talking with me on Saturday. the hours are 385, roughly 30 per year. i went for a test ride last weekend and loved the boat. engine felt/sounded solid, shifted easily, throttle response fine, fluids changed a few weeks ago, depth gauge either read 263' or 0, everything else worked, TAPS work great, needs a ballast pump or 2, solid tower, 1 hairline gel crack on the bow by the running light, dashboard faded and needs some TLC but easy fix. Trailer getting serviced today

Pulling the trigger and picking her up tomorrow, cant waite.
