Visiting Lake Mead

I'm going to be towing my boat from North Carolina to Washington State via Las Vegas in a couple of weeks. I was thinking maybe take a day or two and check out Lake Mead while we are there. Does anyone know if it will be worth the hassle or should we just bag the Lake and spend the extra time in Vegas? Seems like it would be a shame to tow the boat all that distance and not advantage of it.

If you are bringing the boat anyway, then go to the lake. It depends on what you want. Las Vegas is Las Vegas, and everyone needs to see it at least once. You can find a show for any taste...

Lake Mead is nice, but very hot this time of year. Even when you are dripping wet, 110 degrees is warm. Lake Mead is like the Mojave desert, but half submerged, the shore is rock and sagebrush. If you can swing it, you'll be much better off taking the boat to Lake Powell. Lake Powell is like the grand canyon, but half submerged. You can drive all over it. If you are going to Vegas and then going up I-15, it is just 2.5 hours to the East from St. George, Utah. You would have a total of 5 hours extra drving time.

Thanks for the info, 5 hours does not sound like much when compared to the overall length of the trip.

If you will be in Vegas you would launch near Hoover Dam. It is probably only 45 min. to the launch ramp @ Calville Bay or Lake Mead Marina. It will be HOT and DRY! The wind is the biggest killer. We always launch @ Lake Mead Marina and drive a short distance, with all the other inboard to a sheltered spot called The Wall. There was a previous post on this, I'll see if I can find it.

I would go, if you will have the boat with you. We always drive the boat around the point and eat lunch next to the Dam.
