Some of the Z1 s from that time frame would allow the rear ballast to fill whenever you drove down the lake. That was the reason we started routing the ballast hoses up to the top of the gunnel on the inside. It prevented the tanks from self filling. That may have been part of the reason for the spring loaded check valves. If we install check valves we try to use the ones from whale water systems not the residential spring loaded style.

That boat has a great surf wave, tons of push and steep.

Yup, that is what they are suppose to do. What is suggested is that since the pressure has to over come the spring to get flow, plus maybe other restrictions, they slow down the fill a bunch.

This is what I was referring to when I said check valves are used to stop draining not filling.

i could see where a spring loaded plunger c/v could stop passive filling, but the mushroom thru-hulls that Tige uses should not create passive filling. But if there was any, creative routing of the fill hose should cure it and be more effective and less intrusive, than the c/v.

Did self drain or did they stay full?

You know what I am unsure. I was just excited that they filled. I will make a mental note to check that next time.
