Been a while since I posted on the forum. I have a "Texas Lake" question so I figured I should start with the experts. Anyone been to Possum Kindgom Lake near Dallas? Looking at renting a house for a weekend this summer and may try a different lake than LBJ this year. I see it is only 62% full, it that an issue on this particular lake? What are the crowds like on weekends? Any protected water for the buttah? As always I appreciate the feedback from this group!

At 62% full PK can become hazardous. The part of the lake that is by the dam and Hell's gate is very deep so that part wont be any worry to you, but the river ends get very low and boat ramps are impossible to use and what not. I do love the lake and they have predicted some more rain for us in the coming months, so all we can hope is that it goes back up.
The lake is great to party at the gates, but very very rough water coming in and out of that area even on smooth days since so much traffic is there. I personally never let anyone out of the boat until im inside of hells gate or back towards the river end. This lake is only good for smooth water on early weekday mornings like crack of dawn early or at sunset if there is absolutely no wind. Weekends during the summer PK is absolutely packed.
As far as the housing, it really depends where you stay, anywhere on the river ends if you keep to the bouys that is the deepest part of the channels and safest part but when it is shallow every boater knows to stay to the bouys... My dad hit a sand bar in the middle of PK 2 summers ago no damage he was in his I/O so just came to a quick halt.
I would really say call the nearest Marina and launch ramp to where you would be staying and ask. They will know more than I do since I havent been in the past 2 years due to water level being low.

PK is a large and beautiful lake! When it has water..
I use to live in Abilene so we would go there a few times a year, and to experience a 4th of July at Hells Gate is amazing! I called this past week looking for places to stay this summer, but with the water being so low I think I'm just going to press further north to Texoma. Take a look at google earth and you'll see ramps exposed and new shoreline from the low water levels! You can't even get gas at Fox Hollow anymore!
jmhatchett is correct, it's a bathtub when it's busy so don't expect to be shredding in the middle of the lake, unless it's early morning. If you do go, the west end near the state park is a good spot to find some calm water and definitely stop by for lunch/dinner at the Harbor (east side), great food and awesome patio, plus courtesy docks for customers.Last edited by Vicseek; 02-06-2015, 03:56 AM.2010 Tige RZ2 "Fully Loaded" 650hrs
