First time posting...about to go look at a 2000 21V

    Hey guys,

First time poster but been lurking for a little while now. I'm looking at a 2001 21V Riders edition in a few days and I was wondering what I should look for/ask about. It's located at a dealership. I've spoken with them on the phone and they are providing documentation showing all the work they have done on it to get it 100% ready.

It has roughly 340 hrs. The engine was replaced last year by a certified mercruiser mechanic due to the owner not winterizing the boat properly. The motor still has ~12 months left on the warranty. The boat is currently winterized but the dealer has no problem putting it in the water for a test.

I've read about the steering cable issue and the "whistle" that some guys get at certain RPM's. Anything else that guys have noticed on these boats? Thanks!!

We have had our '02 since May and got it at 275 hrs and put about 75 hrs on since. The previous owner had changed the steering cable prior to me purchasing it. The only things we have noticed on ours is that the stitching in the seat cushions is seperating in some places and stress cracks in the gel coat where the tower mounts to the boat itself. My fuel gauge goes haywire sometimes and Taps button controller as well which I want to replace this cool season. (no winter here!!!)
We are VERY happy with our Tige!!!

I used to have that same boat, except the limited 2100v. Now I have an a22. Anyway, that hull does NOT like a lot of weight for wakeboarding. Anything over 1000lbs, the wake because unriddeable with a lot of wash. The best ballast setup I found was 250lb bags in the rear and 750 bag in the bow. For wake surfing, the port side was or the passenger side was always better. I would run a 750 bag in the back hatch and throw some weight in the bow and be good. The best way to describe the wake and hull is, it's not the best for anything but pretty good at everything. However, if you plan to run no ballast or very little weight, this is all of no concern.

Now for the technical stuff. I ran my boat in saltwater about 90% of the time, so I got to see a lot of things that I can help prevent for other 21v owners. First off, the back hatches will drain water directly onto the engine belt and down onto the alternator and pulleys. The provided a lot of problems for me in salt water, but if you put some sort of gutter system/ seal to divert the water else where, that would be a good idea. OR, just make sure no one stands on the back hatches dripping wet.

The upholstery is of the era where it just wasn't the best quality. I think that went for all boat brands around that time. Just be sure to condition them and don't allow people to be jumping around all over the seats. The threads will pull eventually. I like to cover the seats with all the towels possible to prevent this. That goes for all my boats.

The steering cable is pretty easy to change out, I had to lift the fuel tank a little bit, but it wasn't bad at all. I can probably change one out in 45min. The things that broke on me include the TAPS system, the RPM gauge, and the one other gauge.

Engine and transmission wise, The thing never let me down. The 350 block has been around forever so its practically bullet proof.

      Heres the boat I had.

Mine was a SoCal boat, so the tower is different from any other tiges any where else. I heard the metcraft towers were a problem, but I didm;t have to deal with that. The phat tower was rock solid.

in that Era, tige really did it right. It felt like the biggest 21 footer interior wise and had the full wrap around seating. All the other boats had the rear L shape seating. Good luck with the new boat.

        Thanks for the input guys...

Kx: If I do pull the trigger on the boat I will be doing more research on ways to better seal that rear hatch. Has nobody just simply run weather stripping to help better seal the hatch? As for the ballast, I'm 31 years old and well past my prime to take advantage of the "best" wake out there. This will be a boat that my family can enjoy and honestly what you said makes me feel even better about the boat. Not the best for anything but pretty good at everything...that's perfect for what my family and I need right now...

How did the boat handle rough chop? I plan on taking it out to lakes like Lake of the Ozark's, etc? Any issues with a wave going over the bow?

Rough water ride was amazing compared to my A22. It can still get a wave over the bow if you have people up there, but it's a relatively dry boat.
I never got around to sealing the hatches, but Im sure some wether stripping and some type of flange will cure the problem.

I used to own a 2002, same hull.

I always felt that the lip of the wake would get a little wash on top when you put a lot of weight in the boat, but that it was mostly cosmetic. Even with 1500-2000 pounds of ballast it seemed to have a terrific shape, so I really think it is a cosmetic issue, not functional. Back in those days, 2,000 pounds was a TON of weight (pun intended). I suspect that KX has put even more weight in it, and that is when it got garbagish. For most guys, this wake will get you a great ride. In fact, I think KX put up some top notch riding and video on this site, IIRC.

Take a picture of the tower. The tower of that era is possibly problematic and needs careful observation, or replacement if you can do so now.
            Be excellent to one another.

              Yep, heres the old 2100v
              http://vimeo.com/71040460

              And also the A22
              http://vimeo.com/112137241

The a22 isn't a fair wake comparison though haha. We are running 4500-5000lbs of ballast now days.

Nice videos man! I can tell you that wake from the Tige will be more than enough for the foreseeable future for me and my family. If my kiddos outgrow it then I can consider upgrading then....

I do believe it's the bad tower. The tower that's bad from back then makes a "K" shape from the side correct?

Re: boat's ride in chop and waves over the bow

I have a similar, but smaller boat: 2002 20v. I have three small children and boat at Lake of the Ozarks throughout the entire summer, including holiday weekends. We usually stay off the main channel on holiday weekends and boat primarily in the Gravois Arm/Indian Creek area, but we still cruise down to the dam before 10am even on the holidays. As long as you're a safe driver, keep the speed reasonable, and know how to approach larger waves, I don't think you'll have any problems. I prefer boating at Table Rock because of the lack of traffic and smaller boats, but have zero apprehension about dropping the boat in at Lake of the Ozarks and taking the family out to cruise, surf, ski, etc. Will it be a little rougher than a comparably sized I/O? Sure. But that hull can easily withstand the chop from LOTO if the boat is driven properly.

If you've never driven an inboard before, scan some posts on this forum about how to avoid taking rollers over the bow when retrieving a downed skier in busy water. I really think that's the only time that you're much more likely to take on water when compared to driving a similar sized I/O. If you're simply cruising and not worried about retrieving someone, it's as simple as providing enough throttle to keep your nose up - no different than when you're driving a small I/O in rough water my opinion.

Good luck on the search and post up some pics if you make the splash. If you take the family to the north side of LOTO, perhaps we'll see you out there.

Thanks for all the input guys.you're the overall info on the boat its a 2000 21b and I believe it should have it has perfect pass, ballast, roughly 350 hours total in less than 50 on the new motor. The new motor is still under a 12 month warranty. From the picture is the interior looks to be in very solid shape. The trailer has been recently serviced tires are good brakes are good. The boat is on consignment in the dealership informed me that they have fix the steering cable and other little maintenance items prior to putting the boat up for sale bringing the boat to 100% according to them. I am thinking of offering 18,000 dollars for the boatwould this be a fair offer I'm not looking to get a steal the century however I also do not want to overpay for a 14 year old boat.

Well, I'll be putting a deposit down on the boat to hold it...I have to take a business trip for a week or so and when I get back I'll be heading down to lake test and then probably purchase....I look forward to hopefully being a future Tige owner!
