    High Temp Permatex on Risers? Or gasket....

    Who was it on here who told me to use high temp Permatex on my risers?

    Or did I dream that? I retraced my steps and I can't find that anywhere. I am reversing my risers to re route my exhaust.

    When removed--there did not appear to be any gasket material? Ummmmm okaaaaayyyyyy.........me confused.

    No permatex on risers!!! Post a picture of the water passages on both the risers and manifolds so I can see which gaskets you need and so I can assess the mating surface condition.
    Fixing everyone elses boat just so I can use mine...

      Couple things:

      1. My water passages appear to be in great shape, I tried to shoot a pic but that was a lighting issue.
      2. Upon removal, there appeared to be nothing but liquid gasket maker on these surfaces (very little of that I might add).
      3. The only physical gaskets are the rubber o-rings.
      4. I remember now who told me Permatex--it was a person on the phone from Marine Power.
      5. I have revised my exhaust routing--I order the 4x3 elbows from Marine Power that you see on the 2007 and newer boats that have "forward running" exhaust routes. I will be routing down almost immediately after exiting the risers, so hopefully no sloshing.
      6. My only concern is this: the elbows are 4x3, and I need to have 3.5" hose at the transom, and I have purchased 3.5" elbows for the turn toward the transom down in the bilge. Can I "squash" 3.5" hose to fit tight enough on a 3" elbow?

        Wowza!!! I've never seen that before. In this case I would get new orings and just rtv around the exhaust port with highest temp silicone available. Theoretically, the water passages are sealed with the orings so the rtv is only just in case/exhaust port sealant. As for the hose, no you can't squash it from 3.5" to 3". However, if the parts haven't shipped yet you can order directly from Centek the 90* elbow from 4 to 3.5" centek part number 1200521. http://www.marinepartssource.com/new...&mfgno=1200521 <---------$86 ea here.

          I know right?! I thought it a bit odd myself. So far, I have not been able to source the orings.
          Same guy from marine power shipped me the elbows and said i could just clamp the 3.5 down to 3, no big deal. DAMN! Oh well, they were $14 apiece, so its not a major catastrophe. The nice thing about them is that they are only 80 degrees, not 90s, so they make the bend fit more nicely--which i was excited about.

          Is there any way to wrap it with super high temp tape or something to fill the gap? Probably bad idea.

            So after fiddling with the setup quite a bit, I decided I want to keep the 80 degree elbows, so I just bought some straight reducers for 3-3.5" so I can go back up to 3.5" to finish the system. The straight reducer will be the majority of my "down" leg of the exhaust. I am going to have 47 hose clamps, but it should be fine.

              If the elbows are fiberglass you can clean the surfaces and wrap more glass around them to get the desired O.D.
