    scan tool

Does anybody have any suggestions for a good scan tool? I have some nagging issues on my MP 6.0 and I want to be able to see what codes it is throwing and possibly log some data to help me find the issue. The problem is it has mefi 6 and I have found very little information on tools that support this. The two options I have found are below. Are there any other options? Preference between the two below?

This is the one I am leaning towards getting but it only claims support for up to mefi 5. I know mefi 5 and 6 use the same interface cable but I wanted to make sure it would scan for mefi 6 so I emailed them and the one line response was “It should scan it”. I am probably going to give it a shot but I didn’t want to spend $350 on something that may or may not work and that wasn’t exactly a confidence inspiring response. Any opinions on if this setup will in fact work for mefi 6?

This is the other option, it has support for mefi 6 but it is $600 to get the version with the cable I need plus no laptop interface so I think data logging would be more difficult.

How did you end up with a mefi 6 computor system?

Where are you located? And of course, what are your symptoms?

The previous owner of my boat let the engine freeze and replaced it with a newer model marine power motor. I am not sure on the exact year but I think it is a 2011 or 2012 and based on what info I could find I am pretty sure that those motors have mefi 6. It is at least mefi 5 just based on the connector.

I am in Texas near Houston.

I have a couple of different intermittent symptoms.

Symptom 1: Occasionally after idling for an extended period through a no wake zone it will all of a sudden start running very rough. It will run that way for 20 seconds or so before it dies. When it is running rough like this there is a strong smell of gas. After it dies I let it sit for a minute or so and then restart it with a little extra throttle and it will snap out of it and return to running perfectly. This issue was largely gone all summer but has come back on the last few trips out.

Symptom 2: On acceleration at exactly 2000 rpm there will be a momentary blip where the rpm will drop down to 1500 rpm for just a second and then it catches and accelerates normally. This probably happens about 50% of the time.

I have met both of the owners at OBD. They are very helpful and knowledgeable. It is a VERY small operation of what appears to be 2.
If you call them and explain the situation I would think they will work with you. Maybe next week after the holiday weekend? For the chance to see if MEFI 6 will work maybe they would let you return it if it didn't? It's worth asking IMO.

Yeah I sent them an email asking if I could return it but didn't hear back. Like you said probably just has to do with the holiday. I will give them a call next week.

Just to report back I ended up buying the Mefi 5 scan from OBD was able to scan my ecm with it. It is pretty awesome to be able to log everything and play it back later to try and diagnose problems. I am still having an issue getting it to read the DTC codes but I am not sure if that is the system or if there are no codes stored on my ECM or more than likely operator error on my part. As mentioned by TeamAllen the owners seem to be pretty responsive so I am confident I will get it all sorted out. I revived an old thread of mine discussing the actual issues I am having and the readings I saw from the scan.

I have never dealt with MEFI systems but have dealt with after market fuel injection systems including programming. My experience is that reading and presenting data is fairly straight forward and seems to be quite a few people that can do that. Programming is a different animal. Since you are not programming, it sounds like you are on track to collect the info you need. If you ever get into programming, data presentation and method of adjustment is really important when it comes to ease of use. Let us know how it goes and let me know if I can help. I am northeast near lake Houston.
