How did you guys accommodate the boat structural 'flange' that is bolted to the wall in there? Its right in the middle of the floor. Did you build a box around it somehow.

I've built a lot of subwoofer boxes in my day so I agree about building to fit.

I've run some numbers and I don't see how to get the 1.7cuft necessary. Also how did you get around the stringer running across the bottom of the space?

Any comments on whether or not the XS12 is happier being ported or sealed?

Hi JohnnieMo. I'll dig around for some photos, but they may be scarce since I switched phones. That said, I have some solid model shots I can post up that tell the story better anyway.

As for the volume of the box, I worked with a fellow at Wetsounds, and he suggested I go with 1.3-1.6cuft for a ported enclosure. He really wasn't all that concerned with the volume as long as the porting was right. I spent a fair amount of time in the boat taking measurements to see what my max dimensions were in height and width and then adjusted depth to get a reasonable enclosure volume. I used WinISD to calculate port length. All of this was at the suggestion of Wetsounds.

Ported vs sealed is a matter of choice. I'm not an expert here, but my understanding is that the sealed box is often done as it is easier to build and typically requires slightly less volume. The trade off is that it doesn't have as high an output as the ported enclosure. There are many other differences that I can't recall - others will have to weigh in and/or correct me if anything is wrong with my understanding. I will say that my ported box performs very well in my system with the XS-12. I can't imagine how it could sound or perform better.

You'll have to post a picture of the stringer you are referring to. There may be some structural difference between the RZ2 and Z1 that I didn't have to contend with.

It is somewhat hard to see, but if you look under the heater there are three bolt heads. They are bolting through the stringer. It starts at the bottom, and goes up the side of the boat. About 4" tall and 3/4" thick. I can't imagine why no one else seems to have one. I would assume all the Z boats are built like this.

I think I would prefer a vented box. I've always preferred them myself... so long as I can get it in there.

I see now. I did have such a piece in my RZ as well. I cut it down to the floor level. The feature does not repeat in the other locker, and I don't believe it's structural - not for any sort of hull strength/integrity anyhow. It appears to serve only to provide a substantial backing for mounting the helm electronics panel to. Also, when I cut it out, I found it was only very thinly bonded into the floor area, so structural significance seems unlikely.

I am sure there is a way to ask Tige what it is for. I would suggest making a phone call or sending an email. These methods seem to work well for contacting people. If you are uncomfortable with that you can always go old school and Fax them. [emoji6]

Well I emailed customer support and they replied in an hour. It is not structural and can be removed! This makes everything far easier.

JohnnieMo, this is what I was able to dig up for details on my sub install ...

The box has an internal volume of 1.36cuft - 14.5"w x 14"d x 12"h less the 2.56"x2.56"x12" triangular section in the corner. This was done on account of the tapering of the hull towards the bow. The overall exterior dimensions are 19.25"w x 18.75"d x 13.5"h - assuming fully rectangular. The port is 2.5"w x 12"h x 26.57" long. The box is shaped as it is on account of the port, and it simplified construction of the main chamber. I believe that the port is tuned to 42Hz.

Thanks Tulsah. That is a nice box. I've never built a port that has a 90 degree bend in it before. I don't think I knew that was allowed!

An update on today's activities:

I disconnected the heater. It poured anti-freeze everywhere. I guess I thought being externally cooled that it would drain out and not be full. It was even pushing up out of the hoses. Perhaps someone can tell me more about how this cooling system works.....

As a total random question: why does the port and stbd fill wires have a second wire with a diode inline?

Works just the cooling system in a street vehicle, other that raw water cools the exhaust manifolds and the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger acts as the radiator. lake water cools it rather than air. If you pulled the heater hose off on your car, antifreeze would run out just the same.

But in a car, it is a closed system. In a boat, doesn't it all drain out once the boat comes out of the water? As a side note, with it being full of anti-freeze, isn't that all just going to pump into the lake the first time out?

I always thought that with the open cooling it took hot water from the engine and pumped the water through the heater core. Maybe I was wrong but my dealer told us if having it winterized to let them know it has a heater so they take care of it...if it was a closed system with antifreeze in it why would it need to be winterized? Was the boat winterized? If so, maybe that is why it has antifreeze in it.
