It's too bad that lake eats metal or I'd be there all the time.

I'm headed out to Powell August 24th to the 31st. We've rented a 75' houseboat and are taking some customers with us. Heck of a way to conduct business huh? After reading about all of the boats that sink in "the narrows", I've become increasingly alarmed about towing my boat behind the houseboat. We're launching out of Wahweep, can anyone tell me where the Narrows are? Will it be obvious when we're about to enter them? The last thing I want to do is sink my boat in front of a bunch of customers. Any other advice would be most appreciated!

When you get your houseboat, you will head towards the dam, before you get to the Dam, you will make a left turn and go up the main channel. As you make the left turn you will be entering the narrows. It is the narrow main channel that goes around Antelope Island. The main concern that you would have going through the narrows is if you enter after a tour boat has gone through. If that's the case, you will have significant turbulence for about 15 minutes after the tour boat has gone through. Usually it is most turbulent in the afternoon. If you are going through in the morning you shouldn't have a problem. If you have an open bow boat and are towing it through the narrows, then you should be okay. To be safe you might want someone to watch it, especially if the water is very rough. We have rented houseboats from Wahweap for 25 years. It is recommended that you pay the money and get the preboard option, where you pay to get onto the houseboat the afternoon before you are scheduled to depart. In that way, you can get out on the water much earlier in the morning on your day of departure. Even if you are not preboarding, I would suggest going to the boat rental office the day before and do the "paperwork", this should take you about 15-30 minutes and doing it beforehand could save you significant time getting out, otherwise you might be stuck in lines on that morning and be left sitting waiting for others ahead of you. After you get through the narrows, you can turn right and continue up the main channel to Padre bay and beyond, or you can go straight and go to Warm Creek. That is our preferred place to go, as there is plenty of beach area to anchor the houseboat. If you go there, just before you get to the end of warm creek is a little cove, in the back of that cove there is a large beach area, that is perfect for three houseboats. When we were there in July we did alot of "yard work" clearing away the bushes, so now it is very nice beach. Enjoy it with our compliments.
Don't worry too much about the narrows, the problems talked about here are more the exception than the rule, but it is nice to be aware of it.

I can vouch for the tour boat wake. We were at Powell three weeks ago, down by the dam when a tour boat came by, I could not believe the wake that hit us...it was huge! If I had any ballast or a boat full of people the water would have come right over the bow and swamped us.
Another thing that amazed me was how long the water stayed rough after one of those tour boats passed, the wake just bounces off the rock cliffs and stirs forever.-Tip

wlfnvegas:
Make sure and let us know how your week was on the houseboat. If you go again next year, you might want to look into renting houseboats from Steve Carothers at Antelope Point marina, they are new houseboats and the customer service that you get from Steve is second to none, especially compared to Wahweaps.

There might be some weeks for sale if some owners drop out. Anybody interested? Our group always does an excellent job of maintaining our boat.
