Overheating scare on first run

So I was so excited to get my new Tige (click here for specs). We were going to withhold the news from the kids until Christmas and just put it away but I was dying to get it out on the lake. So out we went yesterday. Water was a balmy 49 degrees and outside temp was 64 degrees (18 for us here in Can.) Got the boat in the water and it fired up instantly. Drove around a bit while buddy parked the truck/trailer. Come back in to get him from end of the dock and off we went. Water depth at end of dock pretty shallow. So we drive around for a bit and decide to see what she can do. As soon as I hit 35 the temp starts to skyrocket and soon the alarm is beeping and the boats dies down to idle. Within seconds engine temp is back down to 158 so we try it again. Again, temp shoots up and alarm. Now I'm worried. I text the original owner and try calling him. 5 minutes later he texts back and says it never happen to him but I may have sucked up some mud into an intake. He told me to try and put it in reverse and pin it a couple times. I tried that and it worked! I was so relieved. Here are a couple pics of our day up here in God's country. Something just does not seem right with how you described the series of events. If you were in shallow enough water to suck something up into the suction the prop would be damaged. Putting it in reverse does not change the flow of water. The response from the previous owner sounds like he knew exactly what to do. I would check your impeller right away.

not just check the impellor but makes a guy wonder how the previous owner knew to put in reverse and that would make the warning light go away. Just bizarre IMO. As stated the reverse action wouldn't reverse water flow or clear the engine of mud. Wonder if there is a faulty sensor or something else going on? I would definitely try to put some time on it asap in case you bought a lemon boat from an owner that neglected to tell you it had issues so that's why he sold.

Do you guys think it just forced it through the system? Likely need to check the tranny cooler for debris?

Isn't the scoop on the intake usually mounted forward? I am unsure how driving backwards would dislodge any debris. I would probably take the hoses all off and check to see what is going on there. Usually crap gets stuck at the tranny cooler, start there. I guess I could perceive that going backwards might cause a more turbulent flow into the scoop and 'shake up' some debris in the system, but that really sounds like a stretch of the imagination to me.

What you guys say makes sense. I assumed the water intakes face forward as well. Since this happened I have had it at or near top speed several times and no overheating issues any longer. Strange but I'm happy it's not overheating.

Does the boat not have a raw water strainer ? If it come from Hyperactive originally then the probably not as they seem to choose not to order them with that but if it does have one you should be able to clean the screen.

As others have mentioned the reverse thing seems awfully weird.
