Anybody built a wake gate like this?

There are a couple of threads on here where it's been tried. From what I've read the results were decent. Over the winter I was planning on designing one for my RZ2 but I'm still deciding between the surf gate style and the NSS style. From what I've read on a few forums, the NSS style seems to make a better wave but the gate style seems way easier to build. Lots to read on the Malibu forums too.

That is a pretty interesting idea. Sure beats transferring ballast and people around when you are switching from side to side.

I have experimented with both styles on my 22V and would recommend trying the NSS style first if you are going to have a manually operated system. They both seemed to produce similar waves but, at least with my design, there was a ton of spray coming off the gate and there was a significant effect on low speed handling with the surf gate style since it did not auto retract like it does on a Malibu. I basically was forced to turn with the gate or take a really wide sweeping turn to get back to the rider after I would drop down to idle. The NSS style eliminated the spray and doesn’t seem to effect handling much at all.

seems line the NSS style would put much more pressure on the gate and risk damaging the boat at the attachment point. I'm surprise we haven't heard of more NSS style gates (Nautique, Moomba, Supra) ripping off the transom. Moomba I believe is just lag bolted into the transom.

The NSS style worked better for me as well vs the gate. The gate is also very hard to turn against like Cpropes was saying and gets in the way vs the small size of the NSS. I also got a lot more spray with my gate vs the NSS plate. The NSS plate doesnt seem to put as much load against the hull as I first thought. Mine is only hooked to the deck support.

I would guess that they would reinforce the hull at the attachment point. Maybe not?

based on the retrofits going on old models (on the Moombas anyway), there's no additional reinforcement. Even if its reinforced, a lag bolt would likely eventually strip out.

Interesting... It seems on the MC thread that people are saying the gate was not affecting handling and steering. Also, the OP states later in the thread there is not all that much force against the gate at lower surf speed. His design is just wedged between the transom and swim platform with a notch around the bracket and isn't secured by any other means other than a rope clip in case it falls off.

Wow! That's pretty nice work! Where did he get that adjustable support bracket? That is pretty cool.

If you are interested, it's worth reading the MC thread as there is a bunch of information on how it is made and before/after pictures with it installed. I think most are buying a walking stick from Wally World for the adjustable arm. The attachment points are swivel casters with the wheels removed - pretty innovative ways to use common and cheap items. Most are saying they are building the wood versions for under $30.

I posted this in another thread but my buddy built one on his 2012 Malibu VLX. Probably one of the biggest and longest waves I have surfed so far.
