The 470/170 was the merc 4 cyl (the 470 means 4 cyl 170 HP). A 3.0l based on the gm iron duke 2.5l. Merc bought the rights and made changes although the block casting looked almost identical. Merc machined the block and assembled the engine at Stillwater OK., same plant hey manufactured the lotus designed engine for the 1990ish corvette.

Oh ok. not that familiar with Mercs nomenclature, thanks for that clarification. Been awhile since i had worked on a 3.0, but my memory told me it was close to the 2.5 street. So i guess the 3.0 is another that has its roots in a street vehicle.

hey , i am not against ford making engines, in-fact i applaud it, like i said i wish dodge/chrysler would as well, would make interesting competition!!!!

Competition is never a bad thing, but as the end consumer of a finished product, i dont see us being the beneficiaries of that. We are too far removed. lets face is, i doubt there is a single Tige owner who actually chose Tige over another brand because it comes with The top shelf audio that it does. If that was the case, CC and Bu would loose a lot of market share based on the Polk and R/F offerings. I doubt, at the end of the day, a potential buyer will choose one boat brand over another, based on what auto manufacturer cast the block that the marine engine supplier when with, that the boat builder struck a deal with. If that was the case, Robert T would still own a 90's era CC with a 351W and a carb

So the GM cast Cadi and Vett engines are made this way, but the Ford TRUCK engine is not? We dont have very tall mtns here in NC, but I cant remember the last time i was passed by a Sedan DeVille or Corvette towing a 3K trailer @ 70 MPH up hill

Not trying to mock you or call you out, but just put some thoughts out there. Ford is being discounted as a serious, viable marine engine supplier, for marinizing a truck engine, that started out originally as a street engine. On the other side of the coin, we are praising GM, which did/does the very same thing. I cant think of a single GM block thats been used for sonsumer marine applications, that sis not start out as a street engine.



Im not familiar with that engine, so my questions is sincere. Is that a GM cast block or an actual Merc block? If it was, what vehicle and years was it used? A quick search seems that a 470 was not a production config, but a Hybrid short stroke 502

Exactly my point you never see one , but a boat engine takes lots of abuse , that a car never sees !!!.

Ahmen !! But also realize tige and engine manufacturers don't seem to have the best relationships , but for us consumers hopefully we will see some of the benefits of a long standing relationship !!

If you want to talk about abusing engines..... how about all those Gasser Ford V10's pulling overloaded RV's. I know my gas powered RV is hurting going up the Grapevine or Cajon Pass.

I grew up on my fathers Chris Crafts some had flat head sixes, as the boats got bigger they got 327 chevys , bigger again got 427 fords , then in the 70s they received 460 fords until his last boat had V653 twin detroit diesels , the only issue we had was with the 327 rotting out the ends of the intake manifolds, other wise all performed well.
