Reverse through big rollers? I am not sure what this means. Could you please explain?

So if there is a big roller coming at you. You have to be going less than 5 mph for it work. Just before it would get to the nose of the boat, I put it in neutral and then do a quick reverse. Based on my experience, the boat will back up while the roller goes by. It helps take the impact of the roller out of the front of the boat and the roller goes by without any water getting in the front of the boat.
If its not fun, Why do it?
