I love my rz2 it's my personal favorite, few things you need to ask yourself is how many people are on the boat, what ideally is a good fit for how your gonna use it, I've wakeboarders and surfed every boat in the lineup and all of Tiges boats are awesome it really comes down to personal preferance IMHO either way it's a win win situation, my wife liked the z3 a bit better than the rz2.... Until she got behind the wheel and drove it for a day. They both drive great and are fantastic boats but we went with the rz good luck on your search.surf till u die.

That's a pretty broad question, what is your boating background? First boat? If not what are you coming from? Why do you want a ski/wakeboard/wakesurf boat? How many people go with you out on the water? Kids? Teenagers? Adults? Where do you plan to use it, river, lake, or saltwater? What will you tow it with? Where will you store it? Any size restrictions for storing?
How you see yourself using the boat will go a long way to solid advice from the experienced boaters on this forum. But, the majority of the advice will tell you to demo both boats. Feel and see what boat fits your lifestyle best.2009 RZ2, PCM 343, MLA Surf Ballast, Premium Sound.

To me a Z3 compared to a RZ2 comes down to 2 categories. Styling and Size. Which one fits your taste better styling wise. Which one fits your garage and crew better. Both are excellent boats. We have 2 friends with Z3's and they love them. They have all ridden and surfed behind our RZ2 and agree the wakes are very similarI do all my own stunt work. hey ya'll watch dis.

The other main difference I think nay be important is the hull and its 'big' water capability. I would thinkthe Z3's hull (front) would be better for times when you had to deal with rough water.
Of course I would love to hear from others who disagree if there is some real world experiences on both hulls.

I can tell you from owning a RZ2 and piloting a Z3. You will be hard pressed to dunk the nose of a heavily weighted Z3,but it can be done. Whereas a RZ2 you have to be careful not to dunk the nose when heavily weighted although i personally have never dunked the bow.In rough water the Z3 has the advantage in ride and water and wind protection.I do all my own stunt work. hey ya'll watch dis.

Let me tell you , I have a Z1 which is similar to a Z3 , in rough water it's not to shabby , but you can still take rollers over the bow , trust me , but I find most tournement boats in rough water are not great , as you may know , but the Z3 and Z1 are some of the better ones if the water does get rough

Does he even know for sure he wants an inboard? If it's his first boat he might be better off with an I/O, for example, depending upon what he wants to do with it. We're really working in a vacuum here.

OK, an inboard is what you want and need. Those boys are only going to get more intense into the watersports as teenage takes over!
Both boats are excellent choices. The RZ2 is a proven platform that does everything well. It has several years of production behind it so the bugs are worked out, the community knows it inside and out, etc. I've been in, driven, and behind them many times and have nothing but great things to say about it.
The Z3 is newer and somewhat tuned to be a wakesurf boat, so you get "newer" features but optimizing for wakesurfing might take a bit out of the other watersports. I can't say for sure as I've never been on a Z3. Others here have, so listen to their comments.
Wakesurfing generally seems to become the favorite sport. Most people I know that used to wakeboard seldom do so anymore because everyone would rather be surfing. As an example, we have (I think) five wakeboards and none of them came out of the boathouse last year even once. If I were to replace my boat today, the first one I'd consider is the Z3 because it is a newer design and it is optimized for wakesurfing. But I think the Z3 carries a pretty significant price premium, and for a couple of tens of thousands of dollars I could be very very happy in the proven RZ2 platform.
Bottom line: Visit both, have your whole family sit in and crawl around both, and water demo both doing the sport(s) you like to do. I suspect it will quickly become evident which one your family prefers.

Which lake in ks do you visit?
I know that for me having my 22ft boat it is an excellent all around boat, meaning it is perfect size for Slalom skiing, wakeboarding, surfing, or pulling the kids on the tube. Easy to load and maneuver on water etc. Any boat around this range can be weighted with ballast to throw large surf waves with the flip of a switch or with ppl. The z3 does have a little more room but weighs a 1000lb more than a rz2 so take this into consideration when towing. The z3 will handle choppy water better if your lake gets wind as I'm sure it does in KS. I eventually will be upgrading to the z3 myself but know that I will miss many things about my 22 footer.
