    A few minor issues - 2014 RZ2

I have a couple of minor issues on my new 2014 RZ2 and was hoping I could get some guidance here. I could take it back to my dealer but its sort of out of my way and don’t really want to drop it for a week or more. Also, I think I can handle these issues myself as they aren’t too detrimental. I posted a few other threads (ballast) and trailer issue but here are few more.

    1. The TAPs arm is leaking hydraulic fluid (pink/red fluid) from the top of the arm. Its leaking from what appears to be the big screw top. I read some other threads on here that it might need to be tightened, a new seal or a rebuild kit?

    2. The Speed set seems to vary and drop speed when I’m sacked out while wake boarding. I noticed that I had to really feather the throttle and watch the speed while towing someone. Is there an adjustment for this?

    3. I noticed some water pouring out of the drive shaft seal/collar. Looks like it needs to be tightened or adjusted. Any input or recommendations on how to do this. My last RZ2 had some allen screws that had to be tightened, I wonder if this is the same process?

    Thanks in advance.

#3 is normal. You should have a sealed water-cooled shaft collar. The water you see coming out is from that cooler line. You can see the cooler line in the engine compartment going into the shaft collar.

#2 Are you putting the throttle all the way up? I put my throttle lever to the mechanical stop so the engine has full authority to maintain speed. If you leave the lever where it captures it won't have much extra authority to maintain speed if it slows or you are in a turn.

Matt, it's hard to tell but looks like the taps leak is coming down the transom, if yes then you should remove the 3 screws at the top and tighten down the brass nut that holds the hydralic tube to the ram. You will need to 3m sealant when putting it back together. Just an FYI I spent about an hour going through my boat just making sure that all water connections were tight and nother leaking. About 30% of the hose clamps and fittings needed a little tightining. Joys of boat ownership!!!!

I noticed on my 2014 Z3 that when I set it to a surfing speed with my oversized balast filled that my speed will go up and down about 1 mile and hour while the motor speed adjusts to compensate, its really noticable if turning the boat sharper (adding drag) it feels like it varies more than a mile an hour but thats what the speedo shows, I know I could never hold a steady speed that close manually.

I think if I change to my 1235 acme prop it may hold more steady at the slower speeds due to the lower pitch and larger diameter.

Ah ok. Did not know that. I was wondering why the bilge area was completely dry when I pulled up the ramp but saw all of this water pouring out the shaft.

No I am not leaving the throttle all the way up. I currently hammer it down then pull it back once its around my desired speed, then I leave it there.

Its leaking from the big cap area. See attached pic.

I have no issues with the speed set. Like other suggested, maybe you are not giving it enough throttle? I was out on the water last week with 10 people and the pro ballast filled and kept a constant 23mph for us.
Maybe because I have the S62?

Yeah leave the throttle at the mechanical stop for full throttle and see if your problem goes away. I suspect that is the issue.

Matt leave the throttle way up , I do understand the tendency to pull it back , so you can stop quickly , but the engine needs lots of extra , water from water cooled packing is normal , but the taps cylinder might need to be replaced !!

Agreed., whenever speed set is being used the throttle should be in the WFO position.

That is the exact place my 08 was leaking from.

Thanks guys I will try leaving the throttle all the way up. I guess Im used to pulling the throttle to midway.

I called Bennett and described the issue I was having and the guy said that most likely the cap that is in my picture (with the arrow) just needs to be tightened down. Its not dripping from the transom but right underneath that lip in my picture.

Also, my understanding is that the TAPS2 is electric but still uses ATF fluid. I asked if I should refill the ATF reservoir that has leaked out and he said I might be ok but just to check it anyway. Does anyone know where this reservoir is in relation to the boat?

TAPs reservoir should be behind the dividers at the rear of your Starboard rear locker.

You may have to pull it and drain it, if that leak is serious enough it will suck water into the system when the cylinder retracts

I found out that the TAPs seems to leak a lot more when its all the way down (TAPs at 1). You can see in the picture where its dripping. All the way up (TAPs at 8) and it seems to barely leak. I thought I could just tighten the top cap part but it appears that I have to remove the bottom bolts that connect to the plate itself. I guess I will give Bennett a call again and see what they suggest.

Thanks I found it. It was about half way empty.
