Swim platform hold down bracket broke off

My swim platform bracket broke off today while I was standing on the port side. I noticed the swim platform sat about a 1/2 " further away from the transom than it used to. We were surfing and I got back on the boat and heard a crunch. I looked under water and the top part of the bracket where the pin goes through broke off. I pulled the pin and lifted and reset the bracket. I figured it would hold if we just surfed. I got off on the starboard side and started surfing Heelside on the port side. I then noticed after about 5 minutes the deck was separated from the boat by about 6" so I told Shirley to stop the boat. The pin was still in but the rest of the bracket had broken off the boat below the bottom screw. Has anyone had this problem? 2011 RZ2. We also noticed the platform has been rattling more this year than in the past.Bracket seems to be made of a cheap cast aluminum.

RT, can you post a picture of the broken metal? Did you see any cracks developing? Do you inspect the brackets regularly? I'll be keeping a closer look at mine, but my 2009 are a different design I think than the ones that are breaking.

I didn't see any cracks developing. I had the platform off 2 weeks ago when I waxed the boat. I noticed then that it had a wider gap on the port side than the starboard side. I also noticed I have holes in the bottom of the starboard bracket. So I may have had the screws in that other TO's have said are falling out. I'm just glad it broke in the water instead of at the ramp.Shirley climbs off that way and the ramp is on a steep hill. I don't even want to imagine what could have happened there. I will get some pictures in the morning. I didn't take the boat out the water until 7:30 so it was dark by the time Shirley told me you would like to see a picture.

Okay here's some pictures of both brackets. The port side is the broken one and the starboard side is twisted clockwise as we were surfing on the port side. You can see it scratched the transom a little

Dang! That's real strange. Must hAve been fatigued. Most likely since you hAve owned it I would guess. That sucks bad but most likely you will just have to bite the bullet and buy a new bracket.

I plan on getting both brackets. I just couldn't trust the starboard one after all the load and flex it was exposed to after the port side broke. Hopefully i can find a better material to make one out of.

I would bet that your heavily weighted surf wave puts a ton of pressure on it?

Would it make sense to put some spacer material of some sort between the swim step and its bracket to lift it a little higher out of the water? Or you just need to retrofit a VX onto your boat.

Havent see a VX in person, but doesnt it bolt to the plate form which is held by the very same broken brackets? Yes, i know the new brackets are different, but point being, the VX doesnt actually bolt to the hull, right?

Good point...I don't know where the VX is bolted to either, but since he is going to have to replace the brackets, he might as well get the new one that will fit a VX.

The VX has a much beefier bracket machined out of cast aluminum. I suspect PTM protomet makes it. Both brackets bolt to the same hull bracket. I looked at all the Tige's ,Malibu's,Nautiques and Mastercrafts in the storage lot at our marina. The 2006,2007 Tige's have the same style bracket, only it's made of a much stronger metal. It looks like nibril that the props are made of.

Got in touch with Tige. There are no updates for the brackets. It will be at least next week before they come off B/O. I still want to check into getting some machined out of billet aluminum.

Did you have the screws in the bottom of the bracket installed and tight? My screws fell out after a year and I never bothered to replace them, until this thread. I got a set at Home Depot yesterday, 5/16 course thread pattern. I'm going to put them back in with locktite.

I'm also thinking about getting some Al plates welded and sistered up with my brackets to give them some extra strength. The hole for the pin is pretty close to the edge of the metal on this design.

Dang Robert, it's not a Diving Board, it's a swim platform! I know you were trying to do a triple Lindy off of it and all but sheesh, take it easy!

j/k - sorry to hear, hope you get it fixed quickly.
