    Out of water starting sequence???

    Ok so this may be a stupid question but I'm having issues with a new to me tige. It's a 1999 2100v. Has the Mercruiser 350 engine. Had been sitting winterized all winter. Got plugs put back in check oil all is good. Went to start and it fired right up. Instantly saw a leak so I shut her off. Had a hose I forgot to put back on. Got it all put back together go to start and nothing. It's like it wants to start but it won't. Almost kicks over. Gas is 3/4 full. My question is when using the water flush plunger thing do u start the water up first then crank the engine?? I come from jet skis where u start jetski then the hose if not u will flush water into the intake. What is the process for these boats?? I'm stumped. Checking compression now.

    If you start it without water, you will fry the impeller fast. If you have already done this, you might as well replace the impeller now. I do it every year just as a precaution anyway, had too many trips cut short by an impeller failure. Always have water flowing when you start. Try putting it in neutral and give it a little gas when you turn the key. Never put it in gear out of the water unless you have the neutral actuator pulled out. This way you can increase the rpm's without the prop being in gear.
    Just finished putting in the new impeller and a new amp, now if any of the lakes in Texas had water we would be in good shape!!!

      Turn over= engine spinning but not running.
      Cranking=same as above.
      Kick over=same as above
      What exactly is happening, is it doing absolutely nothing or is it turning over and not starting?

        So figured it out after spending pretty much the entire evening diagnosing my problem.

        1)Engine would spin over and almost start
        2) Compression in all cylinders 145-150psi
        3)Fuel Filter was not clogged
        4)Fresh Gas
        5) Spark Plugs getting spark

        Finally I noticed that when the engine was spinning the belt was slipping. I took the belt off and went to spin all the pulleys and the water pump impeller pulley was not moving. Took it off and apart, Anyways the old impeller was still good. Sprayed some lube spray into the housing, put it back together and I could spin with my hand. Put it back on the boat and everything ran perfectly. I had to give it a tiny bit of gas at first to get the engine to stay running but soon after everything was working great.

        So pretty much my water impeller housing was stuck, which I never figured out why, belt was a little loose which could have been the problem. Anyways everything is great now other then its been raining all weekend and the weather isn't supposed to get better. Yay for being off memorial weekend.

        Thanks for your interest. Things I learned. Impeller sux to change but not impossible,

          Mercs are known for flipping the impellers on shut down. Dont hear of it often, but ive never heard of other engines doing it. Im wondering if yours flipped.
