Gas vent too low for surfing?

Apologies if this topic has been beaten into submission already. I searched and couldn't find a relevant thread. My question is related to a 2004 22V. I noticed while I was surfing yesterday that the gas vent was dangerously close to the water. The gas vent on this boat is right below the gas fill cap. The question obviously is can water enter thru the vent or is there a check valve between the vent and the tank? And had water entered the tank would I have known it (ie would the motor have sputtered and shut off)? We surfed for several hours and ran the boat for a couple hours after we were done surfing as well.

Thank you for the input or reference to the correct thread!!

I think it would be possible for water to enter on that old of a boat. New stuff uses what they call a fumes recovery group like in a car so there is less likely hood of it entering. Plus the vents are as high as they can be and still be on the side. If you took in enough water you would know it as they don't run well on water!! LOL

I'm still baffled why the vent is BELOW the fuel filler port instead of above it. Wasn't true on my previous boat, and thus fuel would back up the fillter port and be very visible long before it would overflow out of the vent, eliminating the complaints we read about here so often. Now the first warning you get is overflow out the vent.

The vent could be above the filler port and still do its job, which is to vent excess pressure that builds up in the tank.

I moved mine forward to near the cleat under the windshield. I use the old vent location for a thru hull for my 2nd bilge pump. I could never prove I was taking on water but didn't want to risk it.

I actually have an extra thruhull in that exact location and have considered moving mine there too. Glad to hear it works!

Awesome info. Thanks for the quick responses!!

I'm assuming that the water would have caused an issue almost immediately if it had gotten in and therefore draining the tank is probably overkill at this point?

And of those who relocated the vent, what all is involved in that install? I'm fairly mechanically inclined but I'm hesitant to put a hole in the boat that isn't currently there...

There may be a check valve on your vent line 2-3 feet from gas tank.

                1) disconnect vent line from check valve and thru hull.
                2) get longer hose
                3) drill new thru hull (should be threads on here about how to do it). Much easier than you would think if you have never done it.
                3) I connected new hose to the thru hull and ran the hose back along gunnell and back to check valve. I think I used high tack sealant on the fittings. Boatwakes told me to use it on my transmission cooler and on fuel lines, I think.
                4) I then added a second bilge pump and reused that old vent hole. If your bilge pump is on the transom on starboard side, you will find that you can accumulate a lot of water before it kicks on.

                It's not difficult at all.

Oops two 3's tough to post from a cell. Also one more thing. You want the hose to loop up as it comes off the vent fitting. I put mine going at a 45 degree angle towards the bow and loop it back. Then if you manage to get some splashing in it, it should drain back out before finding it's way to the tank.
