    Sub enclosure question

Hey all! I think this might have been beat to death but the search function is not working...

My boat has a crappy 12'' sub in a crappy inclosure in front of the driver in the compartment. I talked to my audio guy about cutting a 12'' wet sounds sub under the helm at the drivers feet. He said it will be best in an inclosure which Im fine with, but I wonder how big of one?

Id like it to be small so I get my storage back, the current sub and enclosure take up wayyy to much space.

So does it have to be big?

Not to talk you out of a new sub, but the poor performance out of your current setup could be do to a number of things, and not actually the woofer at all.
    1) sounds like its closed on the locker? This is like robbing half its power
    2) bad enclosure = bad woofer
    3) power driving it
    4) tuning

All of these have to be addressed even if you change woofers.

Now on to your question. Which Wet Sounds 12", the XS-12 or the XS-XXXv2? The XS-12 works well in a small sealed and shines in a vented. About 1.4 ft3 gross external, or about 1.0 net internal.

Ill find out what sub they were planning on using.

I know that I dont like the current setup because it robs me of my storage so I think Ill be doing this "upgrade" to atleast get some storage back.

I know they tuned my tower speakers and WOW is all I can say. BTW Im getting a new 420 as well, apparently I had a channel broken and some of the speakers would stop playing intermittently

Also where would the XS12 have to vent? into the storage or into the boat? Sorry for the dumb questions...Im not a stereo guy

Im confident that you are in good hands, so trust your installers advice. Yes, getting the woofer radiating directly into the cabin and no longer enclosed in a locker will be a huge improvement. The XS-12 will require an enclosure, so you may gain some storage back, but some will still be occupied.

Both the woofer and enclosure port need to vent into the cabin to really gain the benefits of the ported enclosure.

I have an XS-12 in a ported box in my current RZ4 powered by a Syn-2 and it slams....you will love this set up if you are leaning that way.

The enclosure's volumes are actually small (relatively) when you either use the manufacture's specs or calc them yourself. With these guy's help, I designed and built my first enclosure (and complete system) a couple of years ago. That system was a mid budget system and still sounds awesome. Since then I built another enclosure in a full blown WS system, and it really sounds awesome. I am currently upgrading that system's amps and going with two 12" JL W6s.
              • I guess my point is, work with your installer, do your homework, put the sub under the driver's helm and listen to these guys!!

Between Chpthril, David and a few others, they have helped me set up two great sounding systems.

Thanks for the input! They have both Wet Sounds subs but say they recommend the XS-12, so do yall so thats what Im doing. They also said they were planing on building a ported enclosure, but never said if it was going to be ported into the boat or the storage.

Guess I will ask them to port inside the boat. Is it really that much of a difference?

If you vent the port to an enclosed locker you null the benefits of the port.

Man I wish I had a comparison! But I take your word for it. Any special place where the port should be located?

Sotyphoon, my port is vertical on the left side while facing the front. As I stated above with the right tune and power this sub slam's... good luck with your install man.

So still not done. And now its going to be a sealed enclosure with the sub fireing threw the helm. For what its worth it did sound pretty nice even tho its not done
