    Oil change 2009 PCM EX343

Hey all, I changed the trans fluid and oil today. I did the trans first, looks like I got a quart out, since it holds 2 I took the boat out for an hour to mix up the fluid and I will change again.

Now when I changed the engine oil with my cheap extractor I could only get 4.5 quarts out and I believe that engine holds 6. What is the best extractor to get so I can suck out more oil? I tried the dip stick and the oil drain hose threw the plug in the hull but thats all I got and it took FOREVER.

Whats the best way yall have found to get the engine oil out?

I use the MITYVAC 7201 vacuum pump. Warm up the oil. Hook up the pump to the drain hose and pump it out. Should get 4.5 quarts. Then take 1 gallon freezer bag, after breaking loose oil filter, finish removing it with bag engulfing filter. Let few drips end up in bag and seal it up. All this is done with boat in the water. Takes about 7-10 minutes.Fill new oil filter and install. Pour rest of 5 quart jug in motor. Should be full. If not might take additional 1/2 quart. I have never been able to get 6 Quarts on my EX343,usually 5 is all it will take.

So your extractor is able to use the drain hose without pulling threw the hull drain hole?

Yes i attach it directly to hose while it's above engine and vacuum pump is in floor of boat.

I dont think my pump has the power to do that...good excuse to get another

How do you attach to the engines hose fitting?

It comes with several size hard plastic tubes. I attach the largest one to the hose with some of the clear water lines for garden bird baths.[you can get them at Lowes or Home Depot.] I cut a piece about 1-1/2 inches long and slide it over the tube and the rest slides over the threaded end of the drain hose. This pump will reverse so you can fill your transmission and V-drive.

NOTE: always warm up the oil by running the engine for like 5 min (using a Fake-a-Lake if the boat is on land).

I recommed the Pela PL-6000 Oil Extractor for like $50. It works great extracting the engine oil from the drain hose or dip stick. I also use it to extract the boat tansmission fluid & to extract fuel from the fuel pump canister when replacing the (fuel pump) fuel filter.

              It has so many applications.

I have also used it on the lawn mower and snow blower for oil removal and extracting fuel from the tank for winterizaton.

I'm undecided on the Pela or Mityvac. Both are cheaper then the one I have. I hope there suction is stronger.

The suction is good. On a boat oil change (if the oil is warm), I had to pump to build the suction like 2 different times to keep strong tank pressure to extract 5 quarts. The tube is clear so you can see how fast the oil is moving in the tube if you want to speed things up. I would say an oil change took me like 5 min to extract 5 quarts of warm oil.

5 mins would be awesome considering it took me at least an hour yesterday and my engine was aprox 114 degrees

I use the MityVac 7400, which a quick Google search shows is selling for ~$55 from many places. Follow Robert Theisen's instructions above. With the 7400 warmed oil is drained via the drain hose in less than five minutes. When you're done the pump will be sucking air out of the oil pan like your kid sucking on a milkshake straw, right down to the bottom of the pan. Could not be simpler, easier, or cleaner.

As for the transmission (which the 7400 also drains nicely), I have never gotten the entire fluid volume that the specs say is in there. I generally get about half - but since I change my transmission fluid every 50 hours (with every engine oil change) and the extracted fluid looks perfect (no discoloration, no particulates, nothing), I don't fret about it. Pay attention to the manual with respect to transmission fluid level... you really do have to measure it with the engine running and after shifting into reverse and forward at least once. Otherwise it will read artificially high, meaning you won't have enough fluid in the transmission.

Good advice all. I def need to check trans fluid while running. Pretty sure I put back in what I pulled out but will def check. Guess Ill take the rear seat up while boat is in water and running, not easy to check accuratley otherwise

I never rely on that. I rely on accurate measurement. Otherwise, if someone made a mistake in the past (hey, it happens even at the factory or a dealer) you will just propagate the mistake forward forever. Always take your own measurements, it's the only way to be sure.

Do you think I will hurt anything if I over fill? Honestly Id like to run a tad more if it would not tear things up

All I've ever used is the cheap red hand pump found at wallmart. About 2 min of pumping into my oil container and you can hear the sucking dry sound from the oil pan. It sucks everything out, and clean up is easy. My drain line isn't long enough to pull through the drain plug so I just sit in the port side locker and get my pump on. Draining the oil is the easy part; try to discuss oil types and weights on this fourm, there's been alot of talk. FYI I use a FRAM oil filter instead of the costly OEM filters. Been changing oil every 50hrs like this!
