1998 Pre2200 v drive What type of trans????

I am new to the forum. I have owned numerous other brands and I am looking at purchasing a 1998 Tige. Currently the Tige in question is totally trashed. Needs everything, but I don't mind. However, it is missing the transmission. I am told the v drive is still there, but the owner doesn't know anything about it. From my research it appears it could be one of two different companys. Either a walters or PCM. Can any owner who currently has the 1998 v drive share what is in their boat? I want to do my research before I make the trip. And is it correct it has a wood floor and stringers?

It kills me to see a boat like this sit and rot.

I'm pretty certain Tige didn't run PCM during that time frame so doubt its a PCM. Probably a Mercruiser. I had a 97 Mercruiser Direct Drive and it was a Velvet Drive Trans. That would be my guess if it has the Mercruiser.

I have a 1999 2200v V drive and mine has a walters 1 to1 ratio Skidim has them new for 1450.00 and yes wood floor. not sure about stringers. get the serial number and call tige direct to make sure before making any major purchases

Thank you for the quick replies. I was hoping it was a velvet drive. The owner said the v drive is still there but I'm not sure if it is shot. The motor is the Chevy vortec 307

^^That is my guess. Velvet drive Trans with a Walther V drive coupled to a Mercruiser motor.

Just from what your saying the boat is going to need $1000's in work. Keep in mind that boat is only worth low to mid teens Well optioned in great condition. Most will agree that is not a good era of Tige. It would have to be really cheap to be worth your time, IMO!

If you don't mind saying what is the asking price?

You will definitely spend money getting it running. For a boat without a motor, tranny or vdrive I would not pay more than $2-3k assuming that everything else is pristine. You are probably looking at $8-9k for a drivetrain. If your vinyl is trashed that is another few thousand. Don't forget the tower ($1-$5k), a nice prop($600) and perfect pass (

Anyways, might be better to get something that is already running and in "great" condition. We like our 98 2200v a lot but I do wish it had more power and no wood. If the engine ever goes I will probably swap it out for a 383 stroker.

@Bakes..I was thinking a figure pretty close to yours($1500-2K or FREE). Boats that appear to be in good shape can quickly turn into money pits. So when the poster referred to as "totally trashed", I am just naturally assuming its a money pit. You could quickly add to your number doing a floor, stringers and foam then the electrical problems that come from neglect. Plus the trailer is probably trashed and all the little stuff that adds up fast. You would pretty much have to be given the boat to make the numbers work. Unless the OP has some type of emotional attachment to that model, I can't see it being worth it. If you do a major rebuild like this the only way its worth it if you can do it for far less than you can buy a comparable boat for. Your time and frustration becomes equity. if it costs the same or MORE, why bother.

I have slowed down but I used to flip 15-20 boats a year. The 2 things I tried to avoid where major drive problems(engine, trans etc.) and upholstery. Those where the 2 things that were tough to make it pay unless you got the unit beyond cheap. A bad V drive and missing trans certainly fall into that category!

Concur 100%. If I had to do it over again I would have spent $7,000 more and got something newer. My boat had low hrs and was in great condition and I still ended up spending thousands getting it where it is now.

So...in short, if everything else's is pristine and all it needs is a drivetrain I think you would be ok for $2-3. If the vinyl is jacked then I would pass unless it was free to $1000. I view the vinyl as a glimpse into the overall care of the boat. If it is all trashed then you have a higher risk of bad flooring, wiring, stringers etc.

right but at some point you have to consider is there value in putting money into it? @bakes makes some great points and has been there \ done that. I think some great advice given. unless your just looking for a project with no return, then it might be worth it?

Everyone has give some great input. The boat is $1500 and has a tower already. The motor is there and the v drive, I am just assuming they are bad. By me I can get a good condition velvet drive for $300, a crate motor for $1500 (long block marine). I am waiting to see what my local upholstery shop comes back with. My Dad does canvas work, but not so much interior so I would have to pay. Looks like the owner took it to a mechanic to have wok and left it there for some time. The mechanic stole the transmission. I have another boat to sell, so the $1500 I could buy now and start the rehab. If I don't buy this one I am settling on a 1992 Prostar 205 in good condition. Here's the post for the tige. We were planning on visit this area.

Man I wouldn't touch it. Make sure you have upholstery priced out with new foam. I bet it will between 4k-5k with all new foam. Looks like its going to need a floor and stringers as well. Really not a super desirable boat and not worth the redo. Plus the gel is trashed. That boat is just a nightmare!!

I can do all the work myself and was thinking it would have been a good deal if I came in under $8000 for everything. I have redone a few Malibus and mastercrafts over the last few years, but nothing this bad. I really want a v drive, so it was a little blinding. But everyone's feedback helped. I think I'll leave this one alone.

This is very sad, that a great boat like this would get no care ! My 1993 tige 2000slm comp. still looks new today, and mine is 21 years old
