I had a similar progression. CWB Tsunami which appears very similar to the CWB Ride at quick glance. it was great for beginning. at some point i realized I wasn't getting any better. I picked up the Ronix thruster and have yet to find something I like better. I would go with the cheap CWB board to learn. then demo everything you can before buying your good one. I still break out the tsunami for any new riders, it's fairly forgiving. if you do look at the Ronix thruster I would stay away from the 5'7", it's a boat. I ride the little one and I'm 6'2" 185. It's quick and easy to maneuver. Although I am curious to see how the mid size one rides. Demo Demo Demo!!! I bought the thruster about 3 days after riding it for the first time.

Ewok mentioned that we have a Carbon Thruster, so I'll chime in here. While we haven't surfed a huge number of boards, it's still our favorite by a wide margin. The store owner where we bought it was so certain we'd like it that he offered a 100% refund after a weekend of use if we didn't want to keep it. That's confidence in a product! Needless to say, we kept it and love it.
Surfboards are very personal things. What's perfect for one may not be great for someone else. Demo is the key, or follow Ewok's advice and meet folks on the lake to swap boards so everyone gets to try everything.

my first board was a broadcast. kept it for many years and it was a good learning board, but gave it away last year. we found the daniello pro was an easier board to teach on. a little smaller for the lighter/skinier peeps. had a few learn on my IS 4-skim. not a good first board but worked for a few.
we have a ronix koal as a surfstyle first board and a cwb ride as well. all very good boards to learn on and you can progress on them..
we ride soulcraft now but as mentioned, I don't like to teach on them due to the cost
I have found over the years that you may outgrow/get tired of a board, but it's nice to have extras around for the varying degree of people that may ride with you and it's always fun to go back to a board you haven't ridden in a while for an afternoon pull..2012 22ve.. RIP 4/17

I've never had the balls to just side up to someone at the lake and ask to borrow their surfboard. But it really would be great to be able to try someone else's surfboard before I buy it. As I mentioned above, it just seems that the used market is almost non-existent. Maybe it is just because shipping is prohibitive.Be excellent to one another.

I found some used boards locally here. Someone is selling a phase 5 Oogle and 3 phase 5 props of various trims. Right now I have a ronix koal 66" as well, but it's 3 years old.
I'm just looking for a couple boards to have on hand for other riders. At 250lbs these may be too small for me.
Thoughts on these? What's a fair price?
