    Engine removal for starter replacement...

Wow, do I feel sorry for everyone with the 6.0 PCM and its block mounted starter, PCM transmission, what a friggin joke. Just got done replacing the block mounted starter with a top mount/rear mount starter for a member here and was totally disgusted with the original starter location.
The actual problem turned out to be a worn ring gear so the motor had to come out anyway but seriously, I've worked on some terrible access boat engines and this one takes the cake. That starter location (block mounted) is really stupid for more than access. If you want to attempt this project on your own, I'll go to the DIY section and do a write-up but it REQUIRES the engine to be removed. Unfortunately, you cannot just put a starter in the upper position on the bellhousing if you have the port for it. The ring gear on the flywheel actually has to be moved to the aft portion of the flywheel so it's in the correct position for the rear mounted starter and even then you MUST be sure you trust your machine shop. The AFT outer diameter of the flywheel has to be reduced to fit the ring gear (it's the standard 168 tooth for those who care) as the front mount has already been clearanced for it.
We also moved the transmission cooler to the upper support for the v-drive because it's located on the engine front motor mount, starboard side of the boat, under the motor mount...really stupid. I took some pictures so check them out. The boat is a 2004 24v, PCM 6.0 with PCM trans and walter V-drive.

I think it's this particular model and year boat. The mufflers run underneath the engine and clearance between the starter bolts and the muffler is non existent. So not only can you not access the bolt heads but even if you could loosen them, getting them to drop down would be impossible due to the muffler. It just seems to be not really well rigged with that engine option but damn it sounds good while its running. BTW, the muffler can't move due to the oil pan and the stringer on either side.

Yep I have done one on a 2010 RZ4 6.0L. Worst design ever! Biggest pain in the *** starter ever hands down! Never been so frustrated trying to get a starter out. I got it out but swore I would never do another one!

I just did a 2006 6.ol PCM , took the exhaust manifold off , then undid the hose clamps on the mufler and removed the mid trans mount and exhaust elbow and pulled the muffler out , then pulled the starter , now maybe theres less clearence with the trans in your boat , the one I did was the PCM trans vdrive combo not the walters.
