I was thinking that building their own engine blocks was a big step, but then I remembered that Mercury has been doing that for decades. For example, my jetboat had a V6 Mercury engine and it was definitely not a repurposed GM or Ford block. And Mercury has been making (at least) 2.5L and 3.0L outboards based on their own blocks for a very long time.
Plus mercury manufactured the LT5 engine for the corvette from 1990 until production ended. The design was done by lotus engineeeing. And I did the ECM SW for the first couple years! Great test trips around the country including farebanks Alaska...
I think their 2.5l and 3l engines were based on GMs iron duke engine. They bought the rights to the design and the castings started out essentially the same.
