I need some help with my 2001 Tige 21v. It's a Merc 350 Mag MPI Tow sports engine.
After I run the engine for a while, my cool fuel pump will run forever (it will run until my battery is dead). It seems to happen consistently when my engine is hot but there are times when I can turn the battery connector back on after it has been sitting for days and it just starts running even with the engine off with key out of the ignition.
I don't know if this is related or not but the other day we were stuck out on the lake for a while as the boat wouldn't attempt to start after doing some boarding and resting for a short while. It acted like it was "in gear" when I turned the key. IE: the gauges lit up, but the starter never even clicked. I opened the engine compartment and immediately recognized the sound. Turned the battery connector off, waited about an hour, turned the battery back on and it turned right over as if nothing had ever happened. However, as soon as I reconnected the battery after the hour, I immediately heard the pumps running (it started just fine though).
How long should the cool fuel pump run after the engine is shut off? Is it on a timer or temperature sensor?
I can disconnect at the wiring harness for the cool fuel assembly and then I still hear the regular fuel pump on the other side of the engine running too.
What should I look for? When I called a local merc dealer they said they wanted to replace the fuel "pumps" and estimated over $1k w/o even looking at it... needless to say, I'm looking for ideas so I don't go in to repair "clueless".
Also: Is there a repair manual for this engine that might help me?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide some ideas!
Cheers,
Rob
