Need help ASAP to run this weekend-No top end.

    Hi Guys,
This past weekend, our 2005 24V would barely hit 30 mph and last weekend it was performing normally and we could get to 36 mph+. With the sacs full, we had trouble maintaining 22.5 mph. The family said they noticed a more "gassy" smell on the deck and we have fresh air exhaust. The engine is a 6 litre and starts and idles fine. We have about 600+ hours on the boat with no engine work. Sounds like a fuel issue, maybe injectors, but I do not know what to look for or test for. It is much more sluggish when starting from a dead stop, but we were still able to board and surf.
Does the engine have an OBD connection?

    Any comments are appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Martin

Hard to diagnose, but just thought I'd ask if you've changed or checked the plugs recently.

Your engine should have a connection of some type. I don't know too much about it. For my Merc. I needed to know which MEFI connector I needed. MEFI 1- MEFI 4.
I have MEFI1 and bought the cable and software from OBD Diagnostics.

x2 on the ODB2ALLINONE part that is $195. I needed the 4b for a 2004 PCM ZR6 motor. Marine power parts manual might be able to tell you which MEFI you have.

The software is free (donateware) but you are just paying for the cable. I am surprised no one has come out with a $30 one like the ODB2 ones.

software (I think this is it) : http://www.tunerpro.net/

Have not changed the plugs. I was told that if the plugs had issues, you would notice it in how smooth the engine runs. Ours runs pretty smooth, not like on 7 cylinders.

Spend the $25 on a fuel pressure tester. It will tell you if you are losing fuel pressure. Then you can try process of elimination. That's what I'm doing now.

How do you check the fuel pressure? I am a carb guy and I am not that familiar with FI. My engine is the 6.0 Marine Power 380 HP.

Pick up a fuel injector tester at auto parts store, I had to try three before I found one that carried it. I'm in a small town though.

On the fuel rail that feeds the fuel to the injectors should be a little valve. Looks exactly like a bicycle tire valve. It is called a schrader valve. That is where you connect the pressure tester. Mine had a cap on it so it was a little hard to find because the engine is painted the same color. Attach the tester there then you will be able to read the pressure of the fuel system. You should take note of the pressure at all key positions then after you start the engine. Not sure what your pressure should be, you can probably find it on another post. Pressure should stay constant +\-2psi.

                Let us know what happens.
                Chuck

My thought process is if you are smelling more gas even with FAE, you should be getting sufficient fuel. So either spark or air.

And its pretty easy on my boat to pull a plug to see how your motor is running.

Others here, know way more than me but here's my thoughts.

Is there a chance you filled up with stale fuel? I couldn't believe how poorly my engine ran on poor fuel. I couldn't get over 10-11mph. Two cans of Sea Foam and it ran fine but looking back I wish I would have drained the 30+ gallons of fuel vs trying work my way through it. I filled up with premium at a Costco gas station. I have been filling at with 87 octane with some Marine Stabil since and have had 0 issues since (per the wisdom of this forum).

I did the fuel pressure test on the trailer and on the water and pressure was fine on my boat. I did also change the fuel filter in the can that has the high pressure fuel pump (that could have fixed my problem). Have you ever changed the fuel filter yet?

I am no expect on this but I was ready to buy a new fuel pump and it was just the filter or gas.

Also I bought the exact same gauge TeamAllen posted..... Only I paid $15 more from Autozone.... !

The interesting thing about my issue is that one day it runs perfect, the next morning, it was slower out of the hole and topped out at 29.5 mph. It actually was running bad one weekend on Sunday, then two weeks later on Saturday it ran perfect, then the next morning, ran bad again. This past weekend, it ran sluggish both days.

I replaced the fuel filter a year or so back. I use the same station at the lake for fuel (87). The loose connection seems possible as well as testing the FI system. If you have a picture of the fuel pumps and connections on a 6.0, that would be helpful. Thanks guys.

I've had my local filling station get a shipment of bad gas once and it messed up a few people's cars. Depending on how often your gas station gets used and refills the tanks you could have several tanks full of bad gas. Or you might have filled up once or twice when the fuel truck is delivering gas. I've heard it's not a good idea to fill up when the tanker is making a delivery because it mixes up sediment from the bottom of the tanks. One or two fill ups that way could lead to sediment clogging your fuel filter, maybe?

check your fuel filter and your fuel pump, my fuel pump had a filter where the gas line connected to the pump and it was clogged cleaned it and ran like a champ!!!
work hard so we can play hard!!!!
