    Yes the newer boats are equiped with this system, is it necessary thats a tough one , I have a large custormer base that has the old system with hundreds of hours and never had a problem unless they backed off a beach with hard accelleration and blew dirt into the seal, my 2004 has 1500hrs and never leaked a drop, so unless your seeing a leak Id leave it alone .

      that looks really really really easy guys.... just installing that second backup collar after making sure the preload on the seal is correctly adjusted. This is the kind of thing that even a DIY hack mechanic who has never done it before could do in 45 minutes tops.

        Thanks Dom. I guess I'll leave well enough alone. WABoating has been on my boat several times and he didn't hear any of the noises that brought him down the road to a new transmission and the new water fed seal.

          Just to add a bit more clarity: My older "dry" seal wasn't leaking, just making horrific noises when the shaft was turning. Replacement with the "wet" version per the seal manufacturer's recommendation eliminated the noises and things are still nice and dry.

          And in case anyone thinks I was overreacting, here's the sound I was hearing:

            Not so difficult if all you are doing is installing a collar. However, if you are expected to compress this thing while tightening a screw, good luck. There is little room working under the transmission unless you have skinny arms.

              Looks to me like they're having trouble with the rotor not staying in place on the propshaft, leading to relaxation of the compression and thus water leaks. They're brute-forcing a solution by adding another ring behind the rotor to increase the "bite" on the propshaft. The fact that this secondary ring is split means you don't have to pull the shaft to install it.

              Interesting that this shaft seal doesn't use a bellows. Since that heavy rubber hose doesn't compress along its length very well, I presume the compression comes from basically pushing it out of axial alignment? (In other words, "bending" the hose out of a straight line and into something of a curve.) Wouldn't that also cause the carbon ring to be out of alignment? (Because the end of the hose would follow the curve mentioned above.) If that's not true, then what is getting compressed when you push it that 3/8ths of an inch?
