    2001 mercruiser oil change

I have to change the oil and the 25w-40 oil is about $30 a gallon. I was thinking of using just basic castrol gtx 10w-40. My dad had a 1997 centurion with the same motor and always used the castrol. I live in Socal with 70 degree and higher temps and do havasu trips where the ambient temp is 110+. Would I be okay using the gtx?

IMO you will be fine with 10W-40. A lot of owners are using 15W-40 including myself. I recommend Shell Rotella T for $13/gal. @ Walmart.

Where are you located in So Cal?

Thanks for the advice on Rotella, these motors only need 5 quarts right?

To my knowledge yes.... I sometimes squeeze a little more in my ford 351w.. but as for the boat's 5.7l; 5 quarts straight up.... Can anybody else confirm?
